#WIPSnips Simba manned the pintle-mounted machine gun and watched the city roll by. Most of the damage and destitution here had come American and Coalition attacks, so-called surgical strikes that had disabled comms and fucked local logistics. He spat over the side of the Humvee. #amwriting #wip

Bullies famously start to respect you when you give in to them.

#WIPSnips “Why com’st thou?” he asked. “Why are you in my nightmare?” Julia tilted her head back and closed her eyes and a thin trail of blood ran from her scalp, tracing the lines of her face, dripping onto her uniform shirt. “To tell you,” she said. “Tell me what?” “That I’ll see you again.”

I’m going to finish writing this short story today. I’m MANIFESTING it. #5amwritersclub #amwriting #writeandgrind

Rereading one book. Not reading the ones I bought and planned to read. Adding more to my TBR. #5amwritersclub

(“scowl” instead of “glare) #WIPSnips “Gas Can stuck his head around the corner, his ever-present scowl screwed up on his ugly face. ‘Yeah, Sergeant?’ he asked. Cash belched. ‘Gas Can,’ he said. ‘Why’s it smell like Updog in here?’ ‘Upd- what’re you… what? It fucking stinks in here always.’”

Happy Pride!

@altnation.bsky.social @altmadison.bsky.social loving the 2005 throwbacks. Especially some Alkaline Trio gems. Can’t wait to see them with blink this fall!

“The horrors persist, but so do I” went from meme to mantra in no time.

#WIPSnips “She knew the waters were poison, and as if the waters could read her mind, dead fish began to rise to the surface, first in ones and twos, then in their dozens. Her oars knocked against the carpet of dead fish that covered the surface of the dead waters.” #amwriting #writeandgrind #wip

Late on my #WIPSnips post: “Juniper looked out his window at the vacant houses and the Industrial Canal beyond. Flooding had been catastrophic here, and there were rubble-filled lots where the Storm had wiped away homes like the wrath of the Old Testament God. They rode in silence.” #amwriting

When he’s agitated or overwhelmed, my four year old nephew puts his head in his hands and yells “What’s happening?!” and that’s the energy I’m taking into this week.

Gas Can looked the kid over. A ragged coat hung on a scrawny frame, hood up despite the heat. Loose, stained track pants looked like he’d been rolling in dirt or oil. They made Gas Can think about oilfields, vast and burning. He thought about over there. #WIPSnips #amwriting #writingcommunity

@tmiranda23.bsky.social I get off work and drive home each day just in time to hear “How’s it goin’ dude? Hope you’re doing well.” And I’ve come to associate it with freedom for the day. So, thank you for that.

“Behind her, she expected to see the flooded, storm-ruined city she had grown up in. Instead, she saw a vision of Hell, a landscape burning. Thick banks of smoke, lit by strobe lightning, billowed across the landscape of a distant desert. Soldiers in gasmasks stalked through the smoke.” #WIPSnips

Let’s see where this one goes. #writing #writerslife #amwriting #writeandgrind #vampire

Protesting in the streets, compliant between the sheets.

Always a good time at #1stLinePit. So great to see what other writers are up to! And some outstanding openings lines!

#1stLinePit “The first shot killed a trumpeter” BRUTICUS. Gender-swapped Julius Caesar x Triple 9 set in NOLA post-Katrina. A group of crooked cops in debt to the mob plan a final heist. The only way to get away with it is to kill another cop on the other side of town. #WIP #A

#1stLinePit “All of this was fated, more or less.” MOTHER OF MONSTERS. Debut standalone novel. Outcast Echidna & her family must stop spree killer Harry, who has targeted them in order to prove himself to his father in a modern inverted retelling of Hercules’ Labors. #Q #A

An off and on writing day, but I managed to squeeze out another 1,000 words on the second novel. It was tough today but I’m calling it a win. #amwriting #writerslife #writeandgrind #wip #writesky

While writing my stories, I fall in love with characters. Paul “Gas Can” Longue somehow has become one of my favorite characters to write. He’s the Casca character in my Julius Caesar retelling, and he’s scowling comic relief, but tonight he’s on guard duty in Baghdad, thinking of home. #amwriting

Tattoo is healing nicely and the beard is back (for now). A waitress asked me last night if I hung drywall for a living. How could I not love that question?

Drunk-ordered On Tyranny and Yuri Herrera’s first collection tonight. I don’t… party as hard as I used to.

Dhalgren by Samuel R Delany #pretendpanel Mind blowing what he could do with the language and setting.

One more “Julia radioed Dispatch to report the arrests. It was a long time before anybody answered. Between understaffing & shit comms with power down throughout the city, it was hit-or-miss getting in touch with anyone at HQ. ‘Get them to Camp Greyhound,’ came the delayed response.” #WIPSnips

“Dan picked up the Bible. It was bound in cracked and faded leather, its pages worn and creased along the corners, stained by decades of finger-touches. He let the pages riffle through his fingers, and if he’d had better eyes, he could have read it in its entirety.” #WIPSnips #amwriting #writesky
