"Most of today’s superrich owe their wealth to their ownership stakes in companies that are de facto monopolies thanks to network effects," writes @pkrugman.bsky.social. paulkrugman.substack.com/p/inequality...

Mahmoud Khalil has a press conference scheduled today for 5:30 p.m. ET on the steps of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (on the UWS near Columbia)

25 years ago last night, Survivor's first alliance was born. What would competition reality TV have been without it?

I love watching liberals try to justify opposing churches trying to use their land for housing. Just saw someone like “there’s a church trying to put in ‘transitional housing,’ they didn’t say transitional from what, this is why NIMBYs get a good name.” Like just be honest with yourself for once

After outlets ran with “war” headlines, are they gonna walk that back

it’s not surprising but still pretty telling and a bummer that AOC is the only member of the NY delegation to great Khalil upon his return. Both Pressley and Markey greeted Öztürk (and she is a constituent of both). Columbia is not even in AOC’s district!

But you can call me Jon

I have obtained new nonpublic data from ICE that shows that 2/3 of the people it had booked into detention facilities this fiscal year had no criminal convictions at all. Less than 7% have violent convictions. Most convictions were for immigration, traffic, and vice offenses.

I am v frustrated by pretending Dems aren’t also doing the kind of thing suggested. NoVA reps’ earliest Trump messaging was about VHA staffing disruptions in Fredericksburg, there were town halls with nurses calling in

Happy Juneteenth! I wrote an essay on the Emancipation Proclamation as a tangible medium of freedom, www.marquette.edu/haggerty-mus.... “The text of the Emancipation Proclamation is in some ways not there at all; what is left is what intended to be heard. You are free.”

Chinese policymakers find themselves in the challenging position of trying to understand what the evolving relationship between the state and the business sector means for Asian interests, as the lines between the U.S. civilian and military apparatus are increasingly blurred. 😉

You know congestion pricing is a success when you see ppl on here trying to distinguish road pricing (bad!) from congestion pricing (good!). A remarkable marketing victory

This confuses me. I don’t know what the macroeconomic literature has to do with local budget questions. In any case it’s not only urbanists who don’t read the macroeconomic literature to help inform issues like these it is also literally the ppl who draft city and transit agency budgets lol

“Hurry up and wait” followed by “no now actually hurry up”

The first slide, man. “now we understand”

Part of the reason Jinan, a city of over 8 million, has a large trolleybus and BRT system is that it built a metro extremely late. The first urban line was completed only 2021. Up to 2019 Jinan was one of the largest cities in the world without a metro system. Big Bogota energy. Pic posted by 畅行铁道.

Culture of impunity

This is kinda what gets me about the quoted convo (other than being the second Bruenig I’ve seen today, did I even leave Twitter lol). The gotcha works worst in the context where he seems to think it works best.

Love to just glibly talk out my ass about complicated issues I need to appear to have an opinion on, and in the process seem utterly inhuman, ie “pull a Bruenig”

"The plaintiffs did not accuse the NIH of racial discrimination, but Judge Young raised the issue. “I have never seen racial discrimination by the government like this,” in his 40 years on the bench he said, to which there was an audible gasp in the courtroom." www.statnews.com/2025/06/16/n...
