Expanding on this - lakshyas sphere believes three unverifiable things: 1 - voters are reliable reporters of their own ideology 2 - voter ideology can be mapped predictably to specific policies 3 - political parties cannot/ do not change minds, especially by arguing.

If the free market didn't choose segregation, the civil rights act would have been entirely pointless. The supreme court had to invent an entire doctrine of interstate commerce specifically to enforce the CRA provision making it illegal for a hotel to refuse black customers.

The Supreme Court striking down segregation was a regulation of the free market. Homeowners spending money and time lobbying for new racist regulations is the free market.
