The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

Four LAPD officers on horseback surround a man laying on the ground, trample him, and beat him with their polycarbonate "saber" batons.

Representation matters. Having read and listened to some interviews with Ryan Coogler, it is no surprise that they went deep on research to get this right 👏 thegrio.com/2025/06/06/s...

A diplomat in the US embassy noted that the program had been “delivering important services” and warned… “The quality and continuity of care have markedly declined—placing approximately 125,000 (people) at risk of illness and death.” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

This whole 'I'll take the money away from Harvard and give it to trade schools' rhetoric completely ignores *how the money is granted*. For folks outside academia, most NASA research grant calls these days are dual anonymous. The review panel *doesn't even know it's from someone at Harvard*.

We could even start with basic things like how often you have to pay for water or cough minimum wage

Amazing progress that I hope this administration does not manage to ruin. https://www.newscientist.com/article/2480206-norovirus-vaccine-pill-protects-against-winter-vomiting-bug/

BREAKING: The scene at the Rayburn Building is pure rebellion. Protesters are swarming in during live hearings on Medicaid cuts. Security’s losing control. Because when the government wages war on the poor, the poor fight back.

another issue where normal ppl whose morality does not extend to the fate of homeless people can nevertheless be moved simply by explaining the difference between solving problems and solving causes. it's also the first thing anyone should ask about any new policy: does this address the cause

as someone who lives nextdoor to both supportive housing and public housing, i need people to understand that the best locations for both are going to be the central neighborhoods in a metropolitan area, where there is easy and reliable access to services and jobs.

Infuriating. “Of the 469 large renewable projects that applied to connect to Bonneville’s grid since 2015, only one has reached approval” https://www.opb.org/article/2025/05/12/oregon-washington-green-energy-bonneville/

Good reporting by @miasato.bsky.social on how stupid these tariffs are. “Here again, the washing machine study offers an eye-opening detail. In that example, about 1,800 jobs were created. But researchers estimate that it cost consumers about $815,000 per job.” www.theverge.com/tech/607947/...

This section of @davekaufman.bsky.social and my talk with @waub.bsky.social has been playing in my head on repeat ever since. Reconciliation implies two sides to a grievance. Even the word describing the process of moving forward is on the colonizer’s terms. Words matter.

Equally infuriating and well-done reporting by @bethnakamura.bsky.social for @oregonian.com. It’s hard to believe that a kid would randomly accuse someone of calling him the N-word, and yet this principal did

Warnock: I hear people attack poor people and act like it’s a crime to be poor, rather than to recognize it’s criminal for so many people to be poor. They do all of this in the name of Jesus… Jesus is the biggest victim of identity theft in the United States
