CSDMS 2025 Student Modeler Awardee is Marie-Christin Wimmler, TU, Dresden for her submission "pyMANGA: A Modular, Open and Extendable Software Platform for Modelling Forest and Vegetation Dynamics". Full Citation: csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/Syvitsk...

Software!!1! *shakes fist* Starting in about an hour, at 10 am MST. See you soon!

Registration is now open for the CSDMS 2025 Annual Meeting: "Exploring Earth’s Surface with Models, Data & AI". This year’s meeting is held at the University of Colorado Boulder from May 13–15. Registration and additional details, please visit: csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/Form:An... Hope you can join!

I'm looking forward to this upcoming (Thu Feb 13) CSDMS webinar by Daniel Shapero, "Docker, or, What to do When Software Has Betrayed You". Daniel does cool science + software. I think this will be interesting and entertaining. Abstract and registration ->

I’ve called my members of congress and asked them to fight the administration’s federal spending freeze.

The inversion trapping a puddle of cold air in Boulder Valley finally broke up, allowing winds just above to reach the surface.

A thoughtful scientist, luminescence wizard, ultrasupportive colleague, and someone who's made me laugh till I cry on numerous occasions—Harrison is so deserving of the prestigious PECASE award!

Everyone in Boulder is out running before the cold snap.

Back to work after a really good holiday break, and lots of exciting things happening already! It reminded me we currently have an open #ResearchSoftwareEngineer #RSE position in our #AdvancedResearchComputing group at the #RosalindFranklinInstitute. #Job opportunities.rfi.ac.uk/vacancy/rese...

After a month of wrangling, I finally got an example model (written in Fortran, wrapped in Python through Cython, built with CMake and Meson, componentized in the CSDMS Python Modeling Tool, pymt) to build and run on Windows. I am so relieved!

i'm moving away from a two column/week pace in favor of a single extended argument. here is this week's.

EarthscapeHub is undergoing semiannual maintenance Dec 18-20. There may be occasional outages. If you're using a Hub, please save your work often. csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/Jupyter...

Hi, CSDMS-ers! We've started a brand new forum at forum.csdms.io. If you're into earth surface processes, geoscientific software development, or anything between, please consider signing up. It would be awesome if we made this a place to easily discuss research, ask questions, and share ideas.

The application window for ESPIn 2025 opens today!

Bear Peak after today’s snow. #boulder

The CSDMS RSEs (>99% Eric, <1% me) overhauled the documentation for the Basic Model Interface (BMI), improving navigation and modifying internals to make it easier to maintain over time. We've also given the docs a new home: bmi.csdms.io. Please visit and check out the changes!

🌎 Are you an early career researcher keen on Earth surface processes? Want to learn about numerical modeling & software development? Apply for the *free* @csdms.bsky.social ESPIn immersive training experience May 5-12, 2025 in Boulder Colorado. Apply starting 02 Dec buff.ly/40Uefwu

And imo the CSDMS meeting is one of the best you can attend as a student. Both mini workshops and talks & small enough you can easily meet folks

Are you a grad student (or a recent graduate) that has written a model, or a component for a modeling system, or done something cool and modeling-adjacent as part of your research? If so, consider submitting your work for the 2025 Syvitski Student Modeler Award! csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/Student...

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting a Euro-CSDMS workshop to envision future models of the natural world. Inspirational discussions & tangible next steps towards a thriving international community pioneering the next generation of environmental models! @csdms.bsky.social @ukceh.bsky.social

Back in Boulder

Thinking about next-generation environmental models and societal implications with #EuroCSDMS never felt more pressing. With @alexglipp.bsky.social @mdpiper.bsky.social @gregtucker.bsky.social @csdms.bsky.social and many more!

I wanna talk about the "why don'/didn't they just evacuate" sentiment (because I keep hearing it). 1) Evacuation is expensive. Especially if you don't have family to evacuate to, it can cost thousands of dollars. How many of you have thousands of dollars to spend on a week in a hotel?

Job opportunity! We're looking to hire a Research Software Engineer for a cool new project that involves coupling tectonic and geomorphic models. 🧪 @csdms.bsky.social Details here: bc.csod.com/ux/ats/caree...
