Biblionerd; interested in what books do to people, what people do to books. Early modernist by training, chaser of waterfalls and nurturer of plants by passion. All opinions my own and quite capricious.

Dearest humanities friends, I’m sending up the humanities bat signal. Heard a NEH colleague that orgs aren’t submitting requests for close out costs on terminated awards—which they are entitled to!! Here’s what to do: 1/

"i asked grok" "i asked chagpt" yeah well I asked a rare books librarian and they found things I didn’t even know I was looking for, while answering questions about provenance

The Little Engine That Might Later Today We'll Have To Wait And See

We're thrilled to announce a new fellowship opportunity: The BSA-Pine Tree Foundation Fellowship in Hispanic Ephemera! This $3,000 fellowship supports the bibliographical study of printed Spanish-language ephemeral items printed prior to 1850. More info on the BSA website.

Is sunsetted a verb? Asking for me.

Woke up this morning unemployed from our federal government positions. Might we make a small request? Please spend a few minutes today browsing the names & bios of #NEH staff, most of whom are now without jobs, before the agency erases us from its memory. #humanities www.neh.gov/about/staff

Today is officially my separation day from the NEH. It has been an honor and a privilege to support the academic community for the last five years. I don't know what's next- for any of us- but we can work to make things better. Aut viam inveniam aut faciam.

"In the early 2000s I worked with the Huntington ... to secure a large #NEH grant to help create an online database of all people — Natives, soldiers, settlers, missionaries — who were in one way or another affiliated with the California missions before 1850." www.latimes.com/opinion/stor... #amwest

say it again: 4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

A super job for a digital medievalist going here www.jobs.ac.uk/job/DMW815/r...

A big maple fell on my Japanese maple. This is distressing.

Our editorial team is always looking for excellent books on technologies of text/book history from the earliest period to the present day and *global* studies are very welcome. Send us your proposals!

If you know of LGBTQIA+ book-history work in a different format than the many the formal bib supports (it includes zines! exhibit catalogs! digital projects! databases! blog posts, dissertations, +), it might fit in the zine version of the bib—let us know? Eg conferences, communities, syllabi...📚

A Chicago Pope implies the existence of an MLA Pope and APA Pope

On the joys of AI commentary...

A wonderful, timeless slogan. (Thanks to @stwajda.bsky.social for posting this great WWI piece by Dan Smith.)

As an elder millennial, I could trade my lifetime of tax contributions to the NEH for one month of Netflix and have just enough left over to get some avocado toast if I split it with two other people

Trying to document harms of NEH grant cancellations for MLA members. Get in touch with your story. [email protected]

One of the reasons we’re all so tired all the time is because the effort of keeping up just basic literacy with what’s happening politically requires constant reading, studying and analyzing like we’re all enrolled in an upper division History course where the syllabus is released one day at a time

If you missed our initial call for the "Building Book Labs" Symposium @skeuomorphpress.org & @illinoisrbml.bsky.social but want to attend, we have had a number of our international participants (understandably) bow out & could accommodate a few late applicants—send me a message if interested

This week at Pasts Imperfect, we focus solely on the work and workers behind the NEH & ODH. First, ACLS president Joy Connolly defends the NEH & its roll in the humanities. Then, a list of defunded ancient world digital projects, testaments about the impact of the NEH, & new ancient world journals.

We've aggregated relevant @modernlanguage.bsky.social resources, including tips for NEH awardees, links to webinar recordings on threats to higher ed, MLA statements, & links to other resources. Share resources w/ us through the google form, and sign up for the first Strategy Session (April 22).

Want to see the scope of what the NEH grant terminations is? The ACH ( @ach.bsky.social ) has compiled a database: impact.ach.org

Hi! Are you a US researcher who spent time thinking about humans? Then your work is in danger of censorship and loss. I'm here to walk you through basic self-archiving. Maybe you think I am being hyperbolic. You only worked on bacteria! Not your problem. Do me a favor and join me anyway.

A post on our situation at IU, now up on Dailykos www.dailykos.com/stories/2025...

Quoting our Exec Director Peter Berkery: Cuts will create "a disastrous ripple through the entire scholarly ecosystem... & diminish disciplines that drive the development of critical thinking, understanding of value & pursuit of justice & democracy among the next generation of scholars & citizens.”

"American Federation of Government Employees Local 3403, the union that represents many #NEH employees, writes in a statement that it 'condemns these damaging cuts to people and funding. The arbitrary and dismissive approach to employees and grantees is frankly un-American and unacceptable.'"

Please know that NEH staff are heartbroken about all the cancellations and the impact they will have on your work and communities. We also see all you’re doing to support the agency. Thank you!

PSA: NEH awardees should always feel free to email [email protected] with questions, feedback, or concerns. You can also message staff and access (NEH-generated) files in eGMS Reach reach.neh.gov. Any of this correspondence is subject to FOIA.

If you/your grant admin receive/received an official looking email last night or today from NEH (letterhead, correct names), make sure you check the domain it was sent from. Official emails from NEH go through eGMS Reach and would have neh.gov as the domain. Check in with your grant admin today.

A few tips for NEH grantees: 1) if you've spent money on an awarded grant but have not yet drawn down the funds, make sure to submit the paperwork to drawn down funds ASAP. 2) the NYTimes article suggests that "DOGE" might cancel awards. If you receive an email from DOGE cancelling your NEH award,

For those of you who asked if @princetoncdh.bsky.social could stream @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social's talk with us Tuesday, he's posted a public draft below. For those of you interested in my response, it was to pour us each a glass of single malt and sit in silence for a moment.

Reminder! If you are considering applying to the US-UK BDOT program to carry out humanities research on the ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI, our friends at AHRC are offering a webinar next Monday (January 27). Follow the link to register: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ahrc-braid...
