Levitsky, Way, and Ziblatt: "No One Has Ever Defeated Autocracy From the Sidelines" www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/o... (gift link) Key points: 1. We are now living under competitive authoritarianism. 2. We need ALL of civil society to resist the temptation of appeasement and defend democracy.

At least 13 Palestinians have been killed since dawn and dozens of others buried under the rubble of a building destroyed in an Israeli air attack on Gaza City.

Censorship is actively targeting pro-Palestinian voices, silencing truth and justice, also on BlueSky. I’m following this journalist’s backup account and donating via monthly subscription to support his work. I encourage everyone to do the same—standing against censorship is standing for truth.

The only logical conclusion is that the US now endorses "harsh prison conditions, government corruption and restrictions on participation in the political process." www.npr.org/2025/04/18/n...

My story breaking this news exclusively was 7K+ words and had almost all of this in it, and more: www.npr.org/2025/04/15/n...

Loving the reposts and likes! Not to nag, but I really do think you'd get even more out of reading this. I really dig past the "attaboys" and into how this is not about courage, but rationality. Fighting back is smarter than lying down.

"The rare guidance some flight attendants said they received...was chilling and went against their training....He understood the instructions to mean that evacuating detainees was not a priority, or even the flight attendants’ responsibility." #ICE #humanrights www.propublica.org/article/insi...

This seems particularly relevant today...(see thread for a summary) #cantstopthesignal www.wired.com/story/signal...

*Green, not sure where the extra "e" came from.

I'd have preferred a stronger display of defiance from Democrats. The time for decorum is long gone, if it ever existed. Every 5 minutes another Democrat should have interrupted the speech like Greene. At least have everyone stand and turn their backs to Trump. Would have driven him crazy.

Perfectly put. Trump and Vance are actively working against our interests and their failure to uphold their oaths of office must be called out.

Nothing important to say. Just wanted to share that from now on "dodgy" is the only way I will ever pronounce DOGE.

They’ve called armed federal officers to the scene. We aren’t dangerous. We are here to represent our people. To defend public education. This is an authoritarian regime. You cannot block members of Congress from entering the Department of Education.

The NYT asked me to write an op-ed on Musk and the Treasury and then took a pass. I hope it will still get read.

And guess who decides who gets a passport and who doesn't...

“At a minimum, 300 babies that wouldn’t have had HIV, now do.” Send him to the fucking Hague

Remember when the South Korean president attempted a coup and the *armed* military blocked entrance to Congress so Congressmen scaled the walls to gain entry and aides used fire extinguishers to stop the military from preventing them from voting on impeachment. Remember that.

How can a country successfully slow and reverse democratic backsliding? Michael Angeloni looks to Brazil, Poland, and the Czech Republic for our special series "How Democracy Survives." https://www.ifyoucankeepit.org/p/how-democracy-survives-around-the

Do Not Comply In Advance: bossy, already a cliche, implies permission to comply later Fuck You, Make Me: leads by example, directs yelling at opposition instead of allies, easy to chant at a protest or put on a banner

That's kind of the point though. We don't need "leaders" - we need strong communities & networks of people aligned with shared values and senses of purpose. But "fetishizing" the individual has been the US MO for so long now - largely to serve values of consumer capitalism, directly or indirectly.

All this good work and more, for the bargain price of ~1% of the US federal budget, gone in an instant, leaving people around the world in despair. The cruelty is breathtaking. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/w...

DC folks, students, worried people-- Democracy Teach In at All Souls Church this Saturday. We need mutual aid for democracy across the USA. Adams Morgan & this church are historic community leaders. Register here threatstodemocracy.org/rise-for-dem...

In America you need a warrant to conduct a raid. Shit like this is a direct attack on our constitutional liberties. We need to be making a big deal out of this - now
