Can BBC, ITV, C4 and 5 all survive vs the streamers? Ministers contemplating a future where the answer is no... In its sector plan for the creative industries, govt says it's asking regulators to look at how the changing media world might be taken into account when looking at consolidation etc...

BBC scraps Gaza medics documentary over impartiality concerns... It's pretty clear that BBC bosses weren't concerned by the content - but comments made by journalist Ramita Navai on the Today programme this week and producer Ben De Pear at a conference. Story: www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

NEW: The BBC has SCRAPPED plans to show a documentary about medics in Gaza, concluding it “risked creating a perception of partiality”. GAZA: DOCTORS UNDER ATTACK, if and when it is shown, won't be a BBC film. Story coming...

Is there a more powerful tool in UK media than the BBC News alert? This research suggests almost 4 million people in the UK will be notified every time the broadcaster sends one... proper power for whoever makes the call.

NEW: There’s a backlash against the chorus of buzzing phones - “News alert fatigue” is kicking in - with some companies sending 50 notifications a day… Fuelled by the battle for your phone’s lock screen - one of the most important bits of real estate in media: www.theguardian.com/media/2025/j...

NEW: TikTok gets another reprieve in the US… www.npr.org/2025/06/18/n...

NEW: This is the most important woman in British TV... Kate Phillips is the BBC's new Chief Content Officer - making the biggest (and prob most) commissions of big shows in the country. Been behind Strictly Come Dancing, The Traitors and the return of Gladiators. Ultimately its a hits business.

Shift to the right of X/Twitter under Musk even more pronounced in the UK. This again from the Reuters Institute:

NEW: Another watershed media moment - social media overtakes TV as a source of news in the US for the first time. The march of the "news influencers" continues. Survey taken after Trump inauguration. One of many top findings in huge Reuters Institute study. www.theguardian.com/media/2025/j...

NEW: Extent of the shift to the right on Elon Musk’s X revealed. A big increase among right-leaning users, from 10% of the group in 2021 to 15% this year, according to Reuters Institute study. Fall in left-leaning users from 17% to 14%. It's reach has held up - but among a different audience.

In this era of media disruption and falling trust, it can become unfashionable to point out that good journalists and good journalism are a thing. Great piece by @arusbridger.bsky.social, through the lens of the work done by the great Duncan Campbell:

SCOOP: BBC bosses interested in asking US users to pay for its journalism. US seen as a prime target for new BBC revenue, as consumers look for impartial coverage in the age of polarisation. As the licence fee cash dwindles, money needed from elsewhere. Ads already run in the US:

US users currently pay nothing for BBC News content - when UK users pay the licence fee. Surely there must be some demand for its services. But publicly funded US media is under pressure from Trump. Will they be the priority for those willing to pay?

NEW: Substack’s founder talks about speaking to Washington Post about the Post hosting pieces from Substack writers. Part of plans to start curating opinion pieces (after narrowing its own) Hamish McKenzie: It “could be really good for everyone” Cc. @maxtani.bsky.social @brianstelter.bsky.social

NEW: A good news media story! The Assembly, whose interviewers are autistic, neurodivergent and learning disabled people, had more international commissions than The Traitors last year. Commissions in 19 countries already. Authentic, new - & just a great show: www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

Influencers are earning more from ad revenue than traditional media. @michaelsavage.bsky.social‬, media editor at The Guardian, discusses the industry impact on The Media Club with @mattdeegan.com. Listen and watch now: 📺 https://youtu.be/rlb9LL-bVMw 🔈 https://podfollow.com/themediaclub #Podcast

NEW: A watershed moment for global media will happen this year. For the first time, user-generated platforms (YouTube, TikTok etc) will attract more content-driven advertising than professionally produced content. WPP Media report neatly summarises the huge change in media consumption.

*Big Tech dominance update* Just five companies accounted for 54% of all ad revenues last year – Google, Meta, the TikTok owner ByteDance, Amazon and Chinese e-commerce outlet Alibaba. Massive.

A modern media story: Telegraph removed a story about a family who cancelled holidays due to VAT on private schools. The story was denounced as a media AI fail (the dad was "Al"). In fact, a real journalist had been deceived during a real interview. Old school. pressgazette.co.uk/publishers/n...

Something of a mini exodus at Channel 4, following the coming departure of Alex Mahon. Strategy chief Khalid Hayat is off, as is highly rated commissioner Ollie Madden. Changing of the guard with a new chair and CEO coming in. Crucial moment for Channel 4 as pressure increases on broadcasters.

Whatever you think of Soft Power as an idea or a goal, it's sad to see Britain retreat from international connection and understanding www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025... @theguardian.com @universities-uk.bsky.social @scott-mcd-1.bsky.social @michaelsavage.bsky.social @kiranstacey.bsky.social

Great point from @semaforben.bsky.social about how - when the news goes crazy - your most senior sources are just scratching their heads, like the rest of us. I remember it from the Brexit wars - cabinet ministers were happy to chat because no one had a clue what would happen.

If only there had been some indication this was coming

Had a great time talking to @michaelsavage.bsky.social about the Belfast News Letter. It’s interesting to think what such a long running newspaper can tell us about continuity & change in politics, in society & in the newspaper industry.

NEW: Earlier this month, BBC's Feras Kilani & colleagues were detained at gunpoint by Israel Defense Forces in Syria. They say they were tied up, blindfolded, strip searched, interrogated, threatened. Devices taken. BBC "strongly objects to the treatment of our staff and freelancers in this way".

Timeline cleanser story: When recorded 64 years ago, Pretty Little Baby, by Connie Francis, was only deemed good enough to make a B side. But it's been rediscovered on TikTok - 20m video creations - and prompted Francis herself (87) to join the platform. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Not sure the bots are even trying anymore. Check out the map..! What is this even trying to achieve? Is the idea it's so bad I click?

NEW: Senior BBC figures push back at Trump’s administration after it falsely claims it removed a story about a fatal incident in Gaza. Jeremy Bowen says the White House is the institution that has issues with the truth. Is the BBC Trump’s next media target? www.theguardian.com/media/2025/j...

NEW: Want to feel old? “Noughties nostalgia” is big on TikTok… Sex and the City Gilmore Girls Vampire Diaries Skins Imogen Heap Toys R Us www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Interesting tactic

Since moving to cover media, I've been to a handful of conferences. My takeaway - the Q&A seems to be dead. I get it: You can lure speakers with a cosy chat/no tricky questions. What's not to like? The cost is scrutiny. Feels like part of the rise of the podcast chat that serves those involved.

I’m no @karaswisher.bsky.social or @rmac.bsky.social, but I feel we’ve found an AI rallying cry here…

Guardian scoop confirmed - post-BBC Gary Lineker dips his toe in football rights ownership… Goalhanger’s The Rest Is Football has done a deal with broadcaster DAZN for match footage of this summer’s Club World Cup. Recreating a (very) mini match of the day… but an interesting development.

NEW: Yes, AI may bring change on a par with the Industrial Revolution. But before all that, one of its leading figures has a more pressing task for it - rescue us all from the tyranny of our email inboxes. An AI project I can get behind, from Demis Hassabis. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

NEW: Lisa Nandy removes herself from final decision on leader of football regulator. He donated to her leadership campaign - as well as Starmers. Shows the sensitivities now around donors/cronyism. Story: www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

We live in a world with newspapers struggling for a variety of reasons - so here’s a 300 year old story of survival. Just forgive the fact that after the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the paper suggested there wasn’t much news from Paris:

What a joyous thing ⬇️
