Background in philosophy, theology and biology. Look for and support what's good, beautiful, true, and serves the common good (especially "the least of these"). Reject that which is self-serving and cruel. I enjoy cooking and learning about foods.

From Native Son:

“[These] explore how democracy [requires] blood..sweat..inspiration to overcome those who deny equality…to make the principles in the Declaration of Independence the law of the land…we have a right to [equality] before the law, to have a say in our government, and to have equal access to resources.”

Reports and video show flash-bangs thrown into piles of debris just before a car caught fire, strongly suggesting it was law enforcement, not protesters, who sparked it. More details are coming. Don’t let them control the narrative. Thank you to everyone sharing footage, always record everything.

“The Declaration of Independence is special…but not a declaration of love and unity. It is a declaration that human beings have the right to throw off a king to govern themselves. That story is here in the first video of [our new series] Journey to American Democracy” www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

The Coast Guard vessel Eagle at the Portland (OR) waterfront for the Portland Rose Festival.

I’m not sure Russell Vought is as much ignorant as he is evil.

But people like Hesgeth (and the entire GOP administration and GOP senators/representatives) do forget the significance of D-Day and what it was part of the fight against.

How this GOP administration is putting the personal information of Americans into the hands of corporations instead of safeguarding it. @salinas.house.gov @jeff-merkley.bsky.social @wyden.senate.gov

How this GOP administration is wasting taxpayer money to please its king.

Huh. It looks like returning an individual deported to a foreign prison isn’t beyond the power of this administration after all . . .

“[m]ass deportation and immigration enforcement in the interior requires a police state, and the more you want, the more it will look and act like a police state.” “…to build a deportation machine to round up and deport 4% of the entire goddamn population, you must first build the police state.”

Let’s Not Lose Focus….

The dangerous heresy present in a significant cross section of American Christianity.

Although I’m not yet convinced it isn’t just pretend political theater. “That any of us have to care about the breakup of these two massive narcissists—and that they both individually wield such power—is an indictment of our political system and further proves the poisonous influence of Big Money.”

I have my suspicions that this may just be bread and circuses — political theater meant to entertain us and distract us from the GOP administration’s (and Musk’s) endgame regarding political and economic control of the American people. Don’t let yourself be misled.

An analysis of how the ideologically-grounded cruelty and indifference of “conservatives” will cause deaths among “the least of these.”

Rep Rosa DeLauro: “government that serves people and proves good government is achievable is what you fear. You want [it] broken, dysfunctional, starved..You want people to have no one to turn to..Waste, fraud, and abuse are not the targets of this administration. They are your primary objectives.”

We need to get the big corporate dollars out of politics.

“The doctrine of Scripture needs to be de-Americanized…We need to save Scripture from the American culture wars, their tribalism, borderline bibliolatry, their gatekeepers of power and patronage, weird shibboleths, and myopic fixations.”

A new and improved “Pledge of Allegiance”

My suspicion is that this might be just as much disingenuous political theater as the idea that Musk is stepping away from DOGE and working with this GOP administration.

Nothing says “I’m a tough guy” like wearing many pounds of armor, carrying assault weapons, and driving huge armored vehicles to take down children and tiny women.

It’s a reminder that there’s no such thing as “just words” or “just talk.” The things we say and the words we choose to use influence others and impact the world around us. We’re accountable for our “talk.” Especially when our “talk” is lies that help move others towards violence.

We need to advance those rules to protect our data at the federal level.

Casual and indifferent cruelty are now GOP hallmarks.

More on how”conservatives” use words in weird and largely meaningless ways: “compassionate.”

It’s amazing how often “conservatives” use words in weird and often meaningless ways. Things like “freedom,” “democracy,” “prosperity” and “money laundering.”

How the Declaration of Independence’s grievances relate to our situation under this GOP govt. “[Authoritarians] shift from serving the public to serving those in power…The Declaration…warned about this and…[using] loyal officers, military force, and politicized institutions to silence dissent.”

I think it’s more than a bit like the Confederacy is finally making some headway in the Civil War after 160 years . . .

Keep June 14 free for “ No Kings Day.” Every day in America should be No Kings Day.

And we’re going to make sure that a relative handful of people can profit from the situation.

If Trump, DOGE and the “techbros” are allowed to continue unchecked, we’ll be living in a surveillance state every bit as totalitarian and oppressive as East Germany and the Soviet Union. What are my elected officials doing about it? @jeff-merkley.bsky.social @wyden.senate.gov @salinas.house.gov

The 75th anniversary of GOP Senator Margaret Chase Smith’s “Declaration of Conscience” that helped end McCarthy’s fascistic reign of fear. open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

“Every belief you hold [is] chosen because, at some level, it works for you. Or at least, you think it does. It might sound like I’m accusing you (or myself) of [intellectual dishonesty]. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying belief is more personal than we admit. I know because I’ve lived it.”

“Musk put Thiel’s data analysis firm into place across the government to analyze and merge data. Wired and CNN reported how the administration was using this data to target immigrants, and now employees are [saying] the administration could use merged information against Americans more generally.”

What would actually make America healthier? “Our leaders need to hear that this is the future we…expect them to build…when will America start doing better? Not for politics, not for performance or bottom lines, not to prove some point, but to truly move the needle for the health of Americans.”

I’ve always enjoyed this story by Isaac Asimov. It is about a society in which the skills and knowledge needed to do most jobs can be downloaded into people’s brains via machine. However…

Speaking of “Well, we’re all going to die”…

Every day’s #TACO Tuesday now …

How many people in that crowd were thinking “You first”…
