At #ica25? Interested in data research ethics? Head over to the Grand Hyatt this morning at 10:30am for a Blue Sky hosted by myself, @michaelzimmer.bsky.social & @cfiesler.bsky.social. We'll be in the Grand Hyatt Mt Yale (Grand 3).

This is a lie. We all saw the video. The Senator clearly identified himself, and he did not "lunge" toward anyone.   If these miserable propagandists will lie to you about roughing up a U.S. Senator in a room full of reporters, what won't they lie to you about?

This is bad, but also worth focusing on what an insecure, thin-skinned coward Noem is to have her thugs do this rather than her answer a question. These are just the softest people who have ever lived.

What would you say if you saw it in another country? A senator from a coequal branch of government dragged away by security from asking a question of a Cabinet official

Very excited that a paper I'm an author on got accepted to #CSCW2025 after major revisions. Now I'm renewing my wild idea of flying from #AoIR2025 in Brazil straight to Norway and making this a nearly 2-week trip away from home. (That last part is what'll likely prevent it from happening....)

I am sounding the alarm as loudly as I can that Donald Trump has turned the Department of Justice into a cog in his authoritarian machine to prosecute his political opponents.

When D&S researchers Ranjit Singh, @livgar.bsky.social‬, @briana-v.bsky.social‬, and @emnetspeaks.bsky.social‬ set out to interview people about their use of mental health chatbots, they encountered — and were fascinated by — a particular kind of AI-enabled deception. datasociety.net/points/chatb...

This is a growing problem in qualitative research

Surveillance-as-a-service strikes again

leftists: that thing you teach us in school to be terrified of is happening historians: that thing is definitely happening star wars: here is a beat-for-beat breakdown of how the thing happens, but with pew pew lasers. we know you watched it news outlets: these protesters are out of control

Solidarity with every NEH employee who is part of the Reduction in Force, and whose separation from the agency is being enacted today.

I'm working in a design fiction for a conference that critiques the surveillance apparatus necessitated/generated by the rise of autonomous vehicles. But instead of 8,000 words, I might just submit this image.

I know it's super inconvenient for everyone trying to go to work and get the kids into summer camps and all that, but the White House is literally trying to start a civil war

The president says that lawful protest is not allowed in the US. There have been so many signs, but it’s crystal clear that the US is an authoritarian state. It can no longer claim to be a constitutional democracy.

Are folks still using Scrivener for writing books, or are new tools preferred these days? #AcademicSky

NEW: A data broker owned by major airlines sold domestic US flight data to DHS, telling the dept. not to disclose that, according to records obtained by @404media.co—copublished in partnership with @wired.com. No paywall bc FOIA @josephcox.bsky.social w/ the scoop: www.wired.com/story/airlin...

I hearby certify that I am not party to a Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Program (MFTRP). Thanks for asking, NSF.

Apple needs to acknowledge their Apple Intelligence mess. And I think the path forward will be sunsetting "Siri" and starting over with what they'll pitch as an entirely new architecture and brand.

We are one step closer to seeing civilians killed in the streets simply for exercising their constitutional right to protest. Active duty troops don't have a place in confronting peaceful demonstrations; they are trained for war, not for policing the public they swore to protect.

Likely scooping up mobile traffic.

So when people say they aren't fascists here is footage of them shooting a reporter without provocation

important note: the LAPD has figured out it can get footage from Waymos: www.404media.co/lapd-publish...

BREAKING: Kamala Harris issues statement on Los Angeles.

You know when things were pretty quiet and peaceful in L.A.? Before ICE started arresting residents who were bothering no one and going to their jobs. And before DHS and National Guard troops showed up and made the situation worse. Of course Trump and Stephen Miller want the situation to get worse.

Fascism.

This was a hell of a week for me to start watching The Handmaid's Tale again.

NEW: Unbelievable. A seemingly endless line of tanks & other military vehicles arrive in DC ahead of next week's parade. They departed Texas 5 days ago. What a colossal waste of time, money & military resources. All for a President who has shown zero respect for service personnel. (🎥 DW)

I'll be in Denver next week for the @icahdq.bsky.social #ICA25 Annual Meeting. @vitak.bsky.social @cfiesler.bsky.social and I are running a "bluesky" professional development session on "Educational Resources for Engaging Communication Scholars in Pervasive Data Research Ethics" Friday at 10:30am

The public meltdown happening between the world’s richest man 🙄 and the President of the United States 🙄🙄 once again begs the age-old question: are men simply too emotional to be in positions of power?

When you went to the Iowa Writers Workshop but ended up in journalism

NASA has gotten to space without SpaceX and can and SHOULD do it again. Let's not overstate the range of possibilities.

“What if instead of taking the win, Democrats fumble it as hard as possible by being nice to one of the most hated men on Earth?”

The entire internet right now.

Mark Zuckerberg now positioned to be the weirdest rebound relationship in world history

Quick. Somebody tell Trump that the best way to own Elon is to restore all research grants and double NSF funding.

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

‼️

this is like drake and kendrick lamar but they're both drake

So the Dems want to suck up to the most hated person in the US? Who hates unions, women, transgender people and Black people? Whose Tesla plant had areas called the "predator zone" and "plantation"? How much do you think he can donate? They really want to accelerate their path to self-destruction

The "fact sheet" associated with this executive order is of course even more deranged and preposterous than the executive order itself. www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/...

The woman who shouted "people will die" at Joni Ernst, India May, is a nurse and a librarian who first got involved in politics by going to a town hall about bills aiming to defund libraries. Now she's running for state house. eu.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/p...
