#nzpol The pay equity decision today – just before Mothers Day – takes employment law back decades. It will likely impact the earnings of hundreds of thousands of women, often working in some of the most poorly paid work. It will cost us all in the long-run. A 🧵 www.beehive.govt.nz/release/chan...

Hey if cancelling pay equity settlements is about saving money, why don’t we just pay men and white people less and equalise that way

#WarOnNature "Luxon Govt is passing a law tonite that legalises killing kiwi... just introduced a bill... would make it legal to kill protected wildlife. @greenpeacenz understands the Bill is being rushed through all stages under urgency tonite, without public consultation or proper scrutiny" #nzpol

This is *why* retrospective laws are objectionable in principle. Law must be prospective so you can plan your life according to it. Which is what claimant groups, employers, and public servants have done for years. All in the bin in under 24 hours. Millions of dollars worth of work on all sides.

We endured six months of submissions and process for the Treaty Principles Bill, a bill cabinet knew would never pass. Yet the Govt gives just 12 hours for radical changes to pay equity laws that directly impact hundreds of thousands of workers, mostly women, & their families.

"The latest cookery, explained." @chloe.swarbrick 6 May

Part of what really disturbs me about the sudden end of pay equity is the democratic implications - National did not say before the election that they would do this. It is now being passed under urgency, the same day as announcement, with no public input. NZers quite simply have not had a say.

Pretty strong wording - appropriately - from Coughlan in the Herald. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/... Also notes the irony of ACT's Regulatory Standards crowd ignoring some of the most basic principles of regulatory practice.

The pleasure of fresh, new slippers cannot be overestimated. How’s your day?

I’d quite like it if all my neighbours got together and used their weedeaters at the same time, rather than staggering their use throughout the whole weekend. How’s your Sunday? Sorry, you’ll need to speak up.

This cause is close to my heart - please sign - last chance today before the petition is presented: our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/st...

I just cooked a frozen quiche in my air fryer and I’m feeling pretty good about myself. How’s your day?

I am very much a fan of honesty, courage, resilience, vulnerability and @misswhanau.bsky.social

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Imagine having so much money and influence that you could end world poverty. But you don’t. And then instead, you take over government finances and try to take away from people what little they have. Pretty sure that makes you the asshole.

An important point to keep in mind.

Excellent article @legallyfeminist.bsky.social: "To fulfil its international obligations, the government should urgently review the need for legal regulation that places the burden of online safety on large social media companies rather than on users."

LEARNING NEW WORDS AT THE LIBRARY

Until Brian Tamaki and his goons face repercussions for their actions this is just going to continue. No amount of strongly worded statements (none of which I've seen even dare to mention trans people) is gonna cut it. Either arrest them or this will get worse and worse.

Auckland Rainbow Parade: Destiny Church members disrupt march, storm Ponsonby Rd This is the second Destiny church story today filled with violence and in which Tamaki gets several paragraphs to spout his venom. Do better Herald. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/auckland-...

It’s hot today. I put ice in my cat’s water bowl. Too much?

Big love to our worldwide trans whānau today. Loved everyday, but acknowledging the particular fuckery going on in America today. You are loved, you are welcome, you make the world brighter. We are lucky to have you. 🏳️‍⚧️🩵🤍🩷

I want to say a massive TAUTOKO to the amazing and astute protesters at Waitangi; who instead of highlighting David’s nonsense, made it about us and our mana!!! No David, it’s literally not about you. #nzpol

This Waitangi Day, we’re reflecting on wāhine Māori thought leadership for activism & advocacy - and we're excited these images are a preview of “Making Change”, a series of free postcards featuring quotes from our community kōrero! For more info see awc.org.nz/making-change/

When National MP Alfred Ngaro said charities would lose their funding if they criticised the government Bill English reprimanded him and made him apologise. Christopher Luxon needs to show the same standard of leadership and reprimand Shane Jones for his intimidation. #nzpol

Worst job? Being one of the people who has to stand in a group behind a dickhead spouting divisive nonsense, nodding supportively. #toitūtetiriti

Here is a photo of a trans non-binary biologist (me) holding a bird (Eastern Towhee) that is likely a bilateral gynandromorph-- a fusion of cells with female-type chromosomes and cells with male-type chromosomes in one bird! Biological sex and human gender diversity is real and wonderful ❤️🏳️‍⚧️

Further to my reportage regarding the lady who brought her own pool noodles on this cruise… I can confirm not only are pool noodles available locally but this appears to be where they grow them. #CoalsToNewcastle

I sometimes worry I’ve over-packed but today I saw a woman on this cruise ship heading out for the day with three pool noodles she’d brought from home. She’d duct taped them into a bundle to make them easy to carry. Pool noodles.
