This is why retrospective laws are objectionable in principle. Law must be prospective so you can plan your life according to it. Which is what claimant groups, employers, and public servants have done for years. All in the bin in under 24 hours. Millions of dollars worth of work on all sides.

Part of what really disturbs me about the sudden end of pay equity is the democratic implications - National did not say before the election that they would do this. It is now being passed under urgency, the same day as announcement, with no public input. NZers quite simply have not had a say.

I sometimes worry I’ve over-packed but today I saw a woman on this cruise ship heading out for the day with three pool noodles she’d brought from home. She’d duct taped them into a bundle to make them easy to carry. Pool noodles.
