I do wonder, is this a case of willful malevolence to disrupt climate change study, or is this a case of idiots who don't know what they're doing, using AI to make decisions. Could go either way.

LOLOL I think it's time the Post drops the democracy dies in darkness tagline, given that it's actively dousing all the lights.

A huge blow was dealt to hurricane forecasters this week as a critical tool was abruptly terminated by the Department of Defense and NOAA. The immediate discontinuation of data from three weather satellites will severely impact hurricane forecasts this season and beyond. More ⬇️

More on the death of US science

Hmm, some goals for Dorothy.

🔭🧪 Once more for the morning crowd—HUD secretary, like a vulture, is deciding to kick NSF out of its building with NO plan for NSF staff. This is just after forcing staff to be in person at work. The guy is planning on having a private elevator and gym, among other perks, according to AFGE

I think it's likely that RFJ Jr. et al. are using ChatGPT, which is why reports and presentations contain fake references. This reflects a lack of expertise and a fundamental disregard for the job they've been tasked with. Maybe this is why Trump's budget bill has a non-regulation clause for AI.

A fun thing about American politics is that more people voted in New York City in a June primary than live in five states that get two senators.

I’ll bet you dollars to donuts Scott Turner decided the Weaver building was too old and demanded that NSF be kicked of their brand new building. This is so ridiculously wasteful and I am so angry for the people who still work at NSF desperately trying to hold our scientific infrastructure together.

The cost of *just* the munitions could have funded NEH for 33.8 years. When you factor in the cost of the fuel for the B-2s & the refueling tankers, we’re talking a LOT more. But sure, we’re the ones full of fraud, waste and abuse. www.reuters.com/world/us-str...

I would rather die than wear something providing anyone with that much data about me. God the privacy violations.

This is oligarchy. This is obscene. While 60% live paycheck to paycheck & kids go hungry, Jeff Bezos, worth $230 billion, goes to Venice on his $500 million yacht for a $20 million wedding & spends $5 million on a ring while his real tax rate is just 1.1%. End this oligarchy.

Remember, this new normal -- in which gangs of masked armed gunmen are causing chaos in the streets, pulling weapons and assaulting innocent people, and no one can say if they're crooks or cops -- was all sold to Americans as a way to make us feel safer.

i am simply asking the press to cover the government sending masked thugs to rip people from their crying children and shipping them to a foreign concentration camp with the same ferocity they cover a trans kid playing jv tennis in sheboygan

Three years ago today, Trump's far-right Supreme Court majority ended Americans' federal right to abortion under Roe v. Wade. Since then, over 100 women have been denied emergency abortion care. Amber Nicole Thurman, 28, was one of them. Today, share her story. www.propublica.org/article/geor...

Air conditioning is an absolutely vital life-saving technology on a swiftly-warming planet, and people who claim it's somehow more shameful to cool a home than it is to heat one are idiots. I wrote this a few years ago and still stand by it: foreignpolicy.com/2022/01/16/c...

I've been banging on about this, so I guess I'll do so again & let others talk about the substantive horrors of SCOTUS's order allowing ICE to deport people to third countries with no warning: SCOTUS has again thrown lower-court judges under a ginormous bus & rewarded DOJ for defying court orders.

Sheer. fucking. spite.

we actually don’t have to listen to the people who are cheerleading war who were also cheerleading war 20+ years. we’re the adults in the room now and we have the power to say fuck no to shitty ideas.

As our nation girds for possible Iranian terrorist attacks, this is the person Trump put in charge of terrorism prevention. 22 years old. Recent work experience: landscaping/grocery clerk. Never worked a day in counter-terrorism. But he’s a BIG Trump fan. So he got the job.

We’ve bombed Iran. And dismantled our joint terrorism task force. And sent a third of the FBI to help ICE. And gutted the National Security Council. And a drunk guy is in charge at the pentagon. And our intelligence allies probably won’t share intel with us. Because people couldn’t vote for a woman.

If you were too young in 2003 here is what Bush told the American people: 1) The Iraq War won’t cost a lot of money 3) We won’t need a lot of troops 4) We’ll bring peace and freedom to Iraq 5) We’ll find WMDs 6) We’ll be welcomed as liberators 7) It will be easy 8) It won’t take long All lies.

In a more serious country, unilaterally withdrawing from the JCPOA would have immediately ended Trump's first presidency & destroyed the GOP's reputation on national security policy for a generation 🧐

Elon saying he’s going to reprogram his chatbot’s view of history is a perfect example of why these kinds of AI products aren’t the neutral “tools” people always defend them as. They’re little political projects reflecting the ideologies of their creators

Fuck private equity, they destroy everything they touch.

If you think it can’t happen here, remember that it already did. In 1942 soldiers came with rifles to our home and ordered us out. They put us in internment camps. Most of us were citizens.

Goddammit. Do Not Comply In Advance We still don't know what the Congressional budget proposal will be. Trump's shittastic budget proposal is not the final word!

"Peace president."

Lander’s and Padilla’s treatment are part of a series. Trump is using force to go after the entire Democratic/progressive bloc in the U.S. This is a concerted effort to prevent that bloc from ever holding political power again. Marc Elias gives a timeline:

Wolves in the Northern Rockies remain unprotected and at risk. Conservation groups just challenged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in court, arguing the agency ignored science and failed to uphold the Endangered Species Act. Wolves deserve real protection. Everywhere they roam. bit.ly/4k3xGsp

Finally, a Holy War I can join

Amazing: MIT researchers revealed how ChatGPT etc are destroying our brains and booby-trapped the report to expose those who want to use AI to ostensibly summarize the results. t.co/JXeTALBPds

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Trump has gutted FEMA grants to build storm-resistant infrastructure in flood and hurricane-prone communities.  Two-thirds of counties that have lost funding voted for him in 2024.  Trump is even telling his own voters they're on their own. https://www.cbsnews.com/femagrantcuts/
