Finally, a Holy War I can join

💔 A beautiful message to everyone in our country. One they should have never, ever had to make. A powerful and poignant statement from the Hortmans' two children on how they would like their parents to be remembered: @toreyvanoot.bsky.social

Never has it been clearer that “no one is free until Palestine is free” is not a chant but a warning, as we all stare into the abyss of another world war.

Members of JVP here in Chicago have launched a hunger strike today demanding the US and Israel stop starving Gaza. I am so humbled and honored to stand with them today.

So many people showing up in the ways they are able to. Every single day.

“harboring deep contempt 4 its neighbors—engaging in murderous rampages against anyone, whenever & however it pleases…nearly 80 years, total victory has been around the corner: just defeat the Palestinians, eliminate Hamas, crush Lebanon, destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities & paradise will be ours.”

Bombing Iran to distract from genocide.

I'm not against the No Kings protest - you should go. But also be careful not to compare this to what we're watching in LA. There's a difference between a permitted, coordinated march that advocates a return to a sense of status quo & a grassroots movement that calls for its abolition. 1/

The world they are making. Untenable. Unlivable. Stoppable.

"Liberal democracy & its international institutions were founded on the denial of many as fully human as rights-bearing subjects—Palestinians among them." - @srseikaly.bsky.social

Padilla: If this is how DHS responds to a senator with a question you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California.

FINALLY my own article is out in the special issue! I write on being more precise about what we say when using words like "multicultural" and "tolerance" - and the numbing effect of those words in interpreting MT Esther: www.mdpi.com/2077-1444/16...

on this genocide studies scholars community call and my immediate thought is two-fold: why are older scholars surprised? This is an indictment of the field. A field of their making.

Last week I had to explain to my 9yo why a human would be called an alien. Also why someone would describe a human as “illegal.”

My students are young enough, I told them this semester there was a time where ICE did not exist. They just cant fathom it.

and now that Latinos are being chased down like animals at graduations, at construction sites, and in their homes, the “Latinos for Trump” crowd feels “betrayed”. that’s what happens when you try to integrate into a white colonial project that never saw you as human beings.

for many Latinos the American dream is to be American white. conservative Christian practices, traditional family values, belief in meritocracy and bootstrap ideology. it fits because many Latino communities are deeply anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and anti-poor.

Reminder: academia does not care about your health. You must, though. ❤️

its certainly a new day because someone went to wikipedia to dispute the violence in Joshua is somehow not genocide. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocid...

With every news story, I'm thinking about the coworker who said it was paranoia to think students would be threatened. The boss who said "we're talking to DACA students" when I asked how we'd prepare for international student visa threats under Trump.

"Harriet Tubman, along with Black soldiers, took part in a daring Union raid of Combahee Ferry near Beaufort, South Carolina. She became the first American woman to lead a major military operation when she and at least 150 Black soldiers helped to rescue more than 700 Black Americans..."

Yes, you did vote to deport moms.

If you read nothing else today, please read this quote:

guess she’s not solitary after all 🥲 #spiritanimal

An article appeared in Haaretz today by former head of amnesty international entitled, “We objected to the statement that this was genocide and were kicked out of Amnesty. Now I'm not sure anymore” & I don’t know what to make of this trend of genocide facilitators scrambling to record objections.

Meyer said the plaintiff's case was argued coherently and that it was "like a microcosm of the world's problems between people of the southern and the northern hemisphere, between the poor and the rich."

Never forget

murder is bad and if you feel that way then hopefully you also agree mass murder is bad

“these naming strategies help manufacture public consent by divorcing the operations from their material consequences—civilian death, mass displacement, starvation.”

Israel says it carried out ‘extensive attacks’ as operation ‘Gideon’s Chariots’ launched to seize more land in the Gaza.

They literally did the Onion article. Agents posted up outside her hospital room.

I'm caught up with grading. My first summer course is all set, and I am setting my sights on my own writing projects before my second summer course which I am so excited about because it combines my expertise in Bible and genocide plus a focus on reception history. This is my next book project.

Grateful to hear abt @jrvollhardt.bsky.social’s important research in person tonight.
