The expression, “The good old days were never this good,” comes to mind whenever I visit a playground that has seen many iterations. The Alton Playground, originally called the Beechview Playground, is an ideal example. 🧵

The Seldom Seen Greenway is often considered one of Pittsburgh’s “quirky gems,” featuring abandoned bridges, tunnels, and railroad tracks. While most folks gain access from the bottom of the hillside on Saw Mill Run Boulevard, there’s another entrance at the top of the hill in Tropical Park. 🧵

I step off the trail at Vanucci Park, walk through the parking lot, and there they are: Two flowers, faces turned to the sky (as if to say, “Have faith in us; there is a warm, glowing orb up there”), their stems gently curve in unison. I feel like I’ve stumbled upon a secret synchronized dance. 🧵

Like its companion in Beechview, Brookline Monument Park is on a busy road lined with retail shops, small restaurants, service-sector businesses, places for worship, and a smattering of houses and apartments. With so much hustle and bustle, it’s easy to overlook this triangular slice of land.

The Abel Long Playground is a curious space, sandwiched between (Roller) Coast(er) Avenue, where vehicles are either rocketing down or puttering up, and Cagwin Avenue, a quiet dead-end with a few homes and a large parcel of city-owned land. Canton Ave, the steepest street in the US, is a block away.

Is there a City Cat page? I feel like there should be a Cats of Pittsburgh page

I don't live on the north side, and while I think Bobby Wilson has been a great city council member, it will be a sad day when this Cedar Ave row house is sold and rehabbed. Happy primary election day, everyone! WWDHD? 😉

What are my chances of getting struck by lightning? The National Weather Service says the odds are 1:15,300 using an average lifetime of 80 years. I like this, especially when compared to the 1:95 odds of dying in a car crash.🧵

I’ve shot #pittsburgh from this spot during full moons and fireworks, but never at sunrise. I’m thinking that this view would make a great four seasons set, and luckily the springtime one is out of the way. Love how the steps lead right through the scene.

Beechview’s Monument Park is at the Shiras T stop on Broadway Avenue. Whether waiting for the train or looking for a place to sit, it offers a quiet, shady spot in the middle of a bustling commercial and residential corridor.
