My contribution to the resistance is having to read the writings of Pete Hegseth just to only use what I read for a singular sentence. Ask nothing else of me I am tired.

The city is accepting public input on its use of state and federal funds to improve street safety (better traffic design, signage, lights, bike lanes, etc.) You can take the survey here. nola.gov/next/resilie...

Hannah Grieco's debut short fiction collection will be published in less than 2 months and is on sale for a mere dozen dollars. @writesloud.bsky.social @emanquotah.bsky.social

Sotomayor: "The majority subjects a law that plainly discriminates on the basis of sex to mere rational-basis review. By retreating from meaningful judicial review exactly where it matters most, the Court abandons transgender children and their families to political whims. In sadness, I dissent."

We're thrilled to present the shortlist for the 2025 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction:

Terrell wrote. “Scholarly publications, not gag orders, are the currency of academia. …Tulane leaders have chosen to abandon the principles of knowledge, education, and the greater good in pursuit of their own agenda” lailluminator.com/2025/06/13/t...

Kimberly Terrell has resigned from Tulane, saying the university tried to censor her research into racial disparities in the petrochemical workforce. “I cannot remain silent as this university sacrifices academic integrity for political appeasement.”

Last Saturday we stood alongside our comrades to call out the censorship of @tulaneu.bsky.social against Dr. Kimberly Terrell and the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic. Dr. Terrell stood by us in our fight against the Greenfield Grain Terminal and we will stand by her.

New Orleans! Please join me in celebrating @ericarstern.bsky.social 's book release @bluecypressbooks.bsky.social, next Weds, June 18, 6:30 pm! FRONTIER is a beautiful and thrilling ride about birth, the unexpected, and the wild frontiers. I love it. From @barrelhouse.bsky.social books.

I love this contest by @apexmag.bsky.social - though I've never won, several of the flash stories in my collection were sparked by these prompts and got drafted to meet the monthly deadline. They wouldn't exist without the push!

Brace yourself! 🦷⛓️ The flash fiction theme for June is TEETH! You have until the end of the month to submit! www.patreon.com/posts/130412...

My whole life I've wanted two things: To be a father, and to be a writer. But navigating first time fatherhood and being a journalist during a time of great political upheaval has been one of the hardest things I've done. So I wrote about it. antigravitymagazine.com/column/raisi...

Lovely time at the Bay Area Book Fest. Thanks to @janeciab.bsky.social for hosting and so great to speak with @anitafelicelli.bsky.social, Hon Lai-Chu, and @jacqlyy.bsky.social about spec fic! Check out their weird and wonderful books, HOW WE KNOW OUR TIME TRAVELERS and MENDING BODIES

NOW— Mass ICE arrests happened/are happening at the Manhattan immigration court at 290 Broadway on the 20th floor. I was just outside the building and an observer came out crying, confirmed they witnessed people getting detained outside courtrooms while families watched and wept.

i feel a surprising amount of patriotism watching an american on taskmaster

If anyone is putting together an #awp proposal about short fiction, weird fiction, getting unstuck, design thinking-esque practices, generative revision, writing groups that soar, etc etc, know that I would be interested! And also happy to help, as someone who has proposed / moderated in the past.

Costco's only "greenery" on its site is actually astroturf.

New Orleans residents: You can submit public comment on the proposed stormwater fee by 8 am CST tomorrow. I just submitted a comment in SUPPORT, after learning more about this issue and proposal from the Water Collaborative. council.nola.gov/meetings/202... More info: www.wwno.org/coastal-desk...

NEW: Mahmoud Khalil's attorneys urgently ask Judge Farbiarz to order ICE to permit Khalil to hold his newborn son today "for the most elementary human reasons." ICE has so far denied the request, despite his wife and child having made the 1,500-mile trip. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

It’s Mary Anning’s birthday, so time to share @katebeaton.bsky.social’s brilliant cartoon again.

Yesterday, MIT Technology Review published a first-of-its-kind look at AI’s energy use and the resulting climate impact. Here’s how our reporters waded through a mess of data and hidden variables to calculate all of it.

Last week I was asked about sources I trust for news. I named @boltsmag.org as one of the most important sources. Any meaningful resistance must start local; and in order to start local, you must know what's going on locally. Bolts covers that: boltsmag.org/whats-on-the...

Looking forward to this @baybookfest.bsky.social speculative fiction conversation!

These are always just the longest posts ever but everyone always has so many questions. I hope this covers it all! Good luck everyone! Starts May 31! 1000wordsofsummer.substack.com/p/1000wordso...

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

My notebook is full of big ideas and rabbit holes: thank you @deecherrywriter.bsky.social and @maryannaise.bsky.social for talking with @thirdlanternlit.bsky.social writers about activism, journalism, climate and conspiracies to obscure the truth. For a dark talk, i laughed a lot!

When people say this, I think what it often means is that ideas they might once have encountered in the wild and attributed to other artists, they now feel free to take credit for as their own because AI is not a person. “Someone I know had a great idea!” vs. “I miraculously have a great idea!”

This is TONIGHT - I can't wait

I served as guest editor for this year’s Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy. The finish line is sweet, 🏁. It’s due out in October. Here are the stories I chose. Congrats to all the authors! 💐 I laughed, was terrified, wept, was delighted, was disturbed…*and* I had one clear favorite, 🤐😊.

This panel, sadly at the exact same time also looks incredible!

I'm doing a little state of publishing talk next week at our deep south convening and would love to hear from folks working at indie presses (LLC & nonprofit) about how things feel where you are. (You don't need to be in the South, that's the audience.) DM or email.
