My partner & I were trying to ID a bird we heard while walking and the guy who had stopped his car to let us pass got out and was like "it's a frog, actually. Cope's Gray. I do frog surveys... Sorry" And then got in his car without a word and drove off. Absolute king

"What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?" As a game translator, most of the time I do not have access to the game itself—sometimes not even to pictures, background lore or the ID of the characters in a dialogue. It's just a girl with her two column Excel file, and a dream.

When I was going to camp on my own for the first time at 11: if a man is being predatory and you feel likes you’re in danger, kick him in the balls and run for help

I'm loving all the videos of yesterday's protest but especially this wedding party that decided to join in

Minnesota noice

All the people I still know in LA laugh and laugh when they hear that "Los Angeles is burning." I made a couple of maps to show just how tiny and localized the protests are. GOPers are working really hard to make an excuse for declaring martial law. People should be very wary of that.

UPDATE: David Huerta was just released from custody!

Lots of talk today about the demise of BlueSky. For whatever it's worth, it's been a boon to indie publishers like us. Twitter and Facebook have pretty much silenced us, so the engagement here has, and continues to be, wonderful.

not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

“Santa Monica, not far from downtown Los Angeles” is the most hilarious phrase you can say to an Angeleno

for context here’s a map of greater Los Angeles and the protest is the roughly the red circle

Not all treasures are lost… some are just waiting to be reclaimed. Announcing Relooted: An Africanfuturist heist game where you reclaim real African artifacts from Western museums. Please share, & wishlist! youtu.be/KgPxPfXb734 (Wishlist links in next tweet!) @dayofthedevs.org #SummerGameFest

This year's Summer Games Fest presentation was really concerned with how few people made a lot of those games, huh? It feels kinda fucked up. Not just because they're often misrepresntating the real size of these teams, but because I think it's playing directly into a new(ish) flavour of dev hate.

Reminder: Actors are still on strike for bare minimum guard rails on the use of AI in videogames and we have been for 11 months. We have struck longer and with less resources than our on-camera colleagues.

The Polish foreign minister, a writer and journalist who covered the Soviet war in Afghanistan in the 1980s, clearly knows a thing or two about a patiently-timed response.

ok but i need the male character origin stories (marcus fenix, james bond) to be the same as the tomb raider reboot where lara croft was crying the whole time about being bad at stuff. i need marcus and 007 to be fully drool-sobbing that they're bad at shooting a gun or whatever. this is equality.

tomorrow is Stravinsky's birthday. bake Igor Stravinsky a cake whether he's here to enjoy it or not. he put in the work and deserves at minimum a cake from you

the new hit children's pool game for summer is called "marco rubio" one kid yells "Marco" and then everyone else gets deported

It’s good to see me, isn’t it? 💜✨ Yes, yes, the rumors are true — we are OFFICIALLY launching here on Bluesky! In case you forgot, we’re a place to buy books online where every purchase supports local bookstores, not billionaires. Thanks for being here 🙌🏽

All comments of the sort "well, this just goes to show how hard Putin is working to destabilise European democracies" can be safely ignored. Poles were quite capable of making this choice without outside assistance.

The exit poll from Poland's presidential election run-off shows that the result is too close to call. Government-aligned centrist Rafał Trzaskowski has 50.3% while conservative opposition candidate Karol Nawrocki is on 49.7%. All eyes will now be on the official result, due tomorrow.

That was LOUD

I get asked about this a lot, so here's a thread of valuable resources for aspiring copyeditors and proofreaders.

Americans will measure with anything but the metric system

In recent weeks, video game publishers Take-Two and EA both warned investors about potential "reputational" risks to the use of gen-AI in games. It's a problem that all game companies will soon need to confront: Players hate genAI. This week's column: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

Hello Bluesky.

In French 'charcuterie' literally means "pork-butcher's shop." The words are cut from 'chair cuite,' meaning "cooked meat." (In French 'chair' means "meat" and 'cuite' means "cooked.")

Early American currency says STAY IN YOUR LANE

anyway here's the email I sent to jim bankoff last week. i'm still heartbroken. I have been insanely, destructively angry for weeks, and I think I will be for a long time.

My partner Radost has created fantastic visualizations of yesterday's Polish presidential election results — mapped by both population (~half of Poles live in cities) and territory. Explore all the maps here: radostw.github.io/election_202...

Our editor-in-chief @danieltilles1.bsky.social offers five conclusions from yesterday's presidential election first round in Poland - and looks ahead to what it may mean for the decisive second-round run-off in two weeks' time.
