Happy Juneteenth, to those who celebrate. Double Happy Juneteenth to those who don't. Good morning. 🙂

Oh look I found a waste of taxpayer money, someone notify DOGE

Trump: “When you don’t like somebody, you don’t respect somebody, it’s harder for that person to get money if you’re on top.” The U.S. government under Trump: Rule of law? Forget it. Unbridled discretion for the willful authoritarian on top? You got it. open.substack.com/pub/thebulwa...

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future. But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.

Not just tariffs, housing is also the first place you would expect to see a material impact from restrictive immigration policies. Powell noted yesterday the drop in potential growth from reduced labor supply & demand tied to immigration policy, maybe one reason they also raised 2026 inflation?

Extreme weather has extreme consequences for the viability of entire communities. I looked at this a couple of years ago in the bbc doc Uninsurable Planet

“.. The purpose of Juneteenth was always a celebration of emancipation, of the Black community’s emergence out of our gloomy past. But it was also an implicit warning that what had been done could be done again.” @theatlantic.com www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

28-year-old Pedro Luis Salazar-Cuervo, who has no known criminal record, was accused by Texas police of being in a Venezuelan gang because they found a photo of him posing with another man with tattoos, his lawyers say. From ProPublica partner @texastribune.org:

Best news I've heard all day.

This framing exists because the decision is instantly obvious as one of the legal atrocities of US history, like Dred Scot, the 1870s Civil Rights Cases, Korematsu. The Times doesn’t want to say “The Supreme Court stripped rights out of law” so instead it says “Here’s why they did it to themselves”

June 19, 1865 enslaved people were informed of their freedom (though some confederate territories didn't free their slaves until the 13th Amendment was put in place - Dec. 18, 1865). Still, we recognize Juneteenth (June 19th) as a day of recognition, restoration, and a celebration of freedom!

Correct me if I am wrong here: Israel started a war to take out Iran's nuclear facilities while knowing full well it would need American help to strike one of the two major targets. So, Israel is dragging us towards a big war and our president, who ran on not doing exactly this, is considering it?

in addition to connor’s point about the composition of congressional districts, it is worth saying that continetti’s point or objection makes no sense in the context of american history where, lawmakers routinely represented people otherwise outside the circle of equal citizen

What if - and just hear me out here - we *didn't* plunge into a major war.

All the coverage I have heard has considered the destruction of that site to be a foregone conclusion. Which of course immediately caused me to assume that we don't have a chance of destroying it. I wonder what the consequences of failure would be....

The community celebrates after successfully defending the Bedford Ave Bike Lane. Nobody will rip out a single bike lane in this city. Special thanks to @transalt.org and @pwbnyc.bsky.social

Amazing. Playbook is reporting that Trump is "unfazed" by elements of his base opposing war with Iran, because he can be sure they'll back him in the end no matter what. Trump, who knows "America First" is whatever he says it is, understands MAGA better than anyone else (as I tried to argue below).

UPDATE — At least *37* members of Congress have now signed on to efforts against the Trump-Vance administration's moves towards war on Iran. +5 since yesterday. A new Economist/YouGov poll shows Americans strongly disapprove of US involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran: 16-60

Just went to a circus and had some bread and folks, I think this might be the next big thing.

Former U.S. Amb. to Ukraine Bridget Brink has jumped into the Democratic primary for Michigan's 7th Congressional District. Brink left her post in protest of Trump’s policies in April and is now looking to unseat GOP Rep. Tom Barrett. "It's important to fight for democracy at home," she tells NYT.

Not great, Bob!

Exactly! The “criminals” aren’t the ones who are being snatched by ICE or whoever those masked men are.

Planners call it “the popsicle test.” Can a child in your neighbourhood safely walk to a store, buy a popsicle and walk home before it melts? Zoning often prohibits small shops in residential areas. We’re proposing to change that. Tell us what u think! Info sessions June 18 & 19 tinyurl.com/4mpv7mhk

Musk freaks are very entertained that he's posting his drug test results. Will they be as amused when he starts posting theirs? #DOGE #Data

We really don’t talk enough about how NOBODY bashes America *and Americans* more than Trump. It’s his whole goddamn schtick. Everything is a “disaster.” We’re so dumb that other countries “rob us blind” & laugh at us. Non-MAGA Americans are “low IQ” & “stupid people.” Go check HIS social media FFS

the NBA moved it's all star game out of north carolina! it was a huge deal with a groundswell of support from everyone to the left of ben shapiro.

Weird seeing a middle aged billionaire dive head first into sex work like this

I'm actually agape It's literally the meme format: 1) Do thing 2) ???? 3) Profit

Please excuse my salty language, but... WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?

Letters are good. Lawsuits are good. Loud, public collective action is better & urgently necessary. And long overdue.

the President is like 30 seconds away from bombing Tehran and the VP is doing transphobic own-the-libs shitposting on Bluesky (yes, this is a real account he just set up). This is ridiculous man. Like a reverse Dick Cheney where the VP has no power and is being totally sidelined on foreign policy.
