Using anti-DEI policies to dismantle education: A new front in a really old battle - a perspective with @kzutaustin.bsky.social and @hormiga.bsky.social | PLOS Biology journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

Yes they ARE people like you and me. That means they are subject to social contracts like the rest of us. Agents walk into your diner, refuse to serve them. Their kids want to play baseball, ask them to find another team. Nonviolent, consequence based responses to their choices.

This is how they view our natural areas. Make no mistake this is horrible on principle. But the salt in the wound is turning special places like this into places of despair.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

🧵 Today, continuing their run of deplorable and dehumanizing rulings, SCOTUS sided that 🏳️‍⚧️ trans youth are not entitled to medical care and states can legally prohibit them from seeking it…

New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays. Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn. arxiv.org/pdf/2506.088...

Congrats to @paleojim.bsky.social on an awesome segment on #WalkingWithDinosaurs. Utahraptor, Gastonia, and Cedar Mountain Fm don’t get the publicity they all deserve!! #DinosaurPBS

If you are enjoying #WalkingWithDinosaurs tonight on @pbs.org know that the public lands that many of these critters’ fossils come from in the US are under threat to be sold by our government. Call your Senators! #DinosaurPBS

AKA: Do you like people with a spine, or people who think everything in 2024 was just fine?

Well this is not good news. Wrong person in charge of a museum could see collections as a source of quick revenue.

IT IS TIME! #WalkingWithDinosaurs on @pbs.org both PBS & NPR are under attack right now. If you like programs like this, call your Congresscritters and make sure they keep them funded. @wttw.bsky.social

I am baffled by some of the unevidenced leaps higher ed institutions are making toward AI. CalState and Ohio St. are acting nuts, IMO. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...

Understanding these "six truths" - it's real, it's us, experts agree, it's bad, others care, and there's hope - predicts pro-climate attitudes and support for climate policies, @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social finds. In particular, (see next post) ...

Cruelty is the point. Folks doing the “right thing” are now getting targeted. Here’s hoping for a Nuremberg-esque trial one day for every single person involved in this from Homan & Miller to every cowardly agent.

#JurassicPark was released 32 years ago today. Last year, Dad found an old ticket stub in a junk drawer from when we went to see it. Had this made for my bday last year. Note the enormous price for the matinee: $4. Had it framed for me. If only I could get it signed by the original cast.

This is the story Trump wants buried. And the media will comply unless we keep talking about it, and demand that Republican members of Congress answer for it.

The University of Michigan spent $800,000 hiring private investigators--one of whom FAKED A DISABILITY--to surveil anti-genocide protesting students. I'm speechless. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
