Do not threaten us with a good time

May 1st is May Day, a festival of working-class self-organization stretching back over 135 years. We're celebrating with a sitewide sale: take up to 50% off all Verso titles through May 8th!

On the other site, Studio Ghibli-style AI output is going viral and allow me to just say it is profoundly depressing to see that stuff being used to promote OpenAI's latest product. Miyazaki famously called AI-produced art "an insult to life itself"—and this in turn is an insult to him.

No, no, no. The US is not behaving like a “third world country”, or a “banana republic” or as if it were “Americastan”. The US is behaving like a Western country, because that is what it is. That term just doesn’t mean what you think. Stop dragging us into your mess. Own up to who you are.

🛍️ 🛒 shopping time!

NEW: LibGen contains millions of pirated books and research papers, built over nearly two decades. From court documents, we know that Meta torrented a version of it to build its AI. Today, @theatlantic.com presents an analysis of the data set by @alexreisner.bsky.social. Search through it yourself:

“Not to justify the mass killing of civilians. However” is an instant block.

'how do we weigh smug claims about the life saving benefits of steam transportation and modern grain markets when so many millions, especially in British India, died alongside railroad tracks or on the steps of grain depots?' Mike Davis, in the extraordinary Late Victorian Holocausts

Lots of talk of the left dividing itself over pointless feuds, but didn’t we recently just have Occupy Wall Street, Me Too, Black Lives Matter and Ceasefire Now? Not bad for a divided left. Not saying there aren’t divisions, but what interests me much more is the brutal backlash to each movement.

Maybe eventually Verso books might acquire Teen Vogue. Well done on this article.

It's 1898. Foreign powers are fighting over railroads in Africa. It's 1970. Foreign powers are fighting over railroads in Africa. It's 2024...

This is huge. The EFJ represents over 295,000 journalists in 44 countries 👇 www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/media/e...

Happy 40th anniversary of Military and Paramilitary Activities in and against Nicaragua (Nicaragua v. United States of America) - Questions of jurisdiction and/or admissibility - to everyone who celebrates.

Optimist: The cup is half full Pessimist: The cup is half empty Intl. Climate Law Researchers: Affirm that the provision of scaled-up liquid resources should aim to achieve a balance between a full and empty cup.

Congratulations @andreassieber.bsky.social for this timely piece!

I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and it’s both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.
