A case study in architectural engineering design with my inferential conception at its heart, and putting it to very good use. www.mdpi.com/2412-3811/10... #philsci #hps #sts

Looking forward to giving a talk in Padua this coming Friday.

Spending a most enjoyable morning in a workshop on tapestry weaving at the fabulous Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh and I spotted in the shop a book with this tapestry of the cantilever model of the Forth Bridge, which reminded me of @msuarez.bsky.social book 😊

We are excited to announce the appointment of our new Lecturer in Medicine, Health and Society, Dr Helene Scott-Fordsmand @hscottfordsmand.bsky.social, who will join STS from 1st September 2025.

New Paper Out! Probabilistic Empiricism, by @msuarez.bsky.social and myself, examines how probabilistic models representing objective propensities can be confirmed by induction on situations. Now open access at EJPS link.springer.com/article/10.1... #philsci #epistemology

How can you still have an article on this topic that doesn't mention once that cuttlefish are sentient beings that feel pain, plan for the future, remember specific events, learn and strategise? They're more than a mass noun. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I recommend James' review of my book even if I disagree strongly with the final critical point, which I think misses the point of any deflationary view. Yet, it is careful enough to merit a response, which I hope to publish reasonably soon.

I don't advocate judging a book by its cover (well - except my own books), so people should read the review. But this is a great cover - it shows people demonstrating the basic principles behind a cantilever bridge, which for reasons the cover makes clear is particularly relevant around these parts.

My main interaction with Michael Friedman over the years involved bringing him to Spain as a keynote speaker for the founding conference of EPSA in Madrid in 2007. He was a fantastically fit first keynote for a European version of the Philosophy of Science Association.

Our article "Probabilistic Empiricism" co-authored by me and @msuarez.bsky.social to be published soon in the European Journal for Philosophy of Science. It presents an empiricist epistemology for objective probabilities. Pre-print available here: philsci-archive.pitt.edu/24924/ #philsci #philsky

I have been remembering Katherine Hawley while checking literature on trust these days. Here's my brief remembrance of her: katherinehawley.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/2021/05/06/f... Reading through the other memorials, she was clearly much loved and appreciated.

PJ Wehry interviewed me for his Chasing Leviathan podcast a few months ago. Brief and pleasurable - I enjoyed it a lot: youtu.be/OOqclaU7_og?... Also available in Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/3nfeOTG... #philsky #philsci #HPS #HPS+ #philtech #HistoryofScience #STS #metascience

Since moving to Aberdeen, I've noticed that Thomas Reid's underrecognised. Born in Aberdeenshire, he studied and taught at the UoA, yet only a humble plaque marks his legacy. While David Hume boasts an impressive statue on the Royal Mile there's not even a street in Reid's memory. #Philosophy #Scot

Call for Applications: Editor-in-Chief 📘 EPSA seeks applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science. Editorship will be assumed on 1 September 2025 and is held for a renewable term of 4 years. Deadline: 15 May 2025 📅 ➡️ philsci.eu/news/13468458
