Happy birthday PHP #30years

Not so scientific statistics that I find: if you are hungry in a French city at 3pm, restaurants you find open are all Turkish

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Apple!!! Why the gap? Bringing a stupid feature that other OSs have for decades and still doing it wrong. WHY!

GitHub MCP suffers from the lethal trifecta for prompt injection: access to private data, exposure to malicious instructions + the ability to exfiltrate information Be really careful with this stuff: attackers can trick your "agent" into stealing your private data simonwillison.net/2025/May/26/...

Don't compain when candidates do that for job applications

We need a smart AI API, that integrates ALL AI providers, when you send requests with costs limits (time + money), understands the use case, proxy it to the best model. Should adapt to newly announced models in a day or two + have sticky session (consequetive calls go to same model)

Solar deployment overtaking nuclear because it doesn’t take 20 years and a bajillion <currency> to pop up some solar panels and plug em in.

Every AI tool is getting github integration, any news on gitlab side?

End of an era

Ekrem İmamoğlu’s account is now withheld in Turkey. The jailed mayor of Istanbul...Censored. On a platform run Elon Musk who claimed he’d die on the hill of free speech. Turns out that hill has a price and it’s payable to authoritarian regimes.

Tomorrow (Thursday) you can join me, Tim O'Reilly, Addy Osmani, Kent Beck, Chip Huyen, Birgitta Boeckeler, Jay Parikh and several other tech professionals giving our take on how AI will change software engineering - but why software engineers won't be "replaced" by AI or "AI sw engineers." (cont'd)

Published some notes on Microsoft's phi4-reasoning model, an 11GB download (via Ollama) which may well overthink things... it produced 56 sentences of reasoning output in response to my prompt of "hi" simonwillison.net/2025/May/6/p...

I just learned that Clowncore is actually Louis Cole from Knower, who featured with Vulfpack and Snarky Puppy where I first heard him from and Sam Gendel, who was also in music video Overtime. Now all the pieces fall into place, and now I know why I like Clowncore www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnEm...

Apple approves Spotify app update that allows U.S. users to access pricing info, external payment links

LLMs are proof that the cause of stupidity is not the lack of access to information.

Brexit was & is a killer. Fact.

Turn any gRPC api into an #mcp server: github.com/redpanda-dat... ... watch a live demo here: youtu.be/gIFN8NlV8vk?... ... let's go! ... apache 2 licensed

If you want to create completely free software for other people to use, the absolute best delivery mechanism right now is static HTML and JavaScript served from a free web host with an established reputation. Here's why think that in more detail: simonwillison.net/2025/Apr/28/...

New LLM release from Google Gemini: Gemini 2.5 Flash (preview), which lets you set a budget for how many "thinking" tokens it can use. I got it to draw me some pelicans - it has very good taste in SVG styles and comments. simonwillison.net/2025/Apr/17/...

Twitter + Bluesky user's dilemma: when you comment on a post, you comment on where you see it first (ex: tw). But when you realise it is also shared on your preferred platform (here), what would you do? Comment here as well? But it feels weird 😅

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but 2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but 3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So 4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

This happened: I and Cursor couldn't figure out something, for a while. We both were confused. Then I found out the problem was something about my local setup. ...and I wanted to tell Cursor it was not its fault and teach it the way. In a sec figured it can't learn from me yet and felt a bit upset

before musk, twitter was able to leverage its international fame and able to reject such blanket requests based on merit. governments had to risk looking bad for blocking twitter fully (esp relevant to turkey due to EU pressure). after musk, it seems to have gone fully complacent to censorship.

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

I hope fintech developers didn't hard code tariff values as constants. #Tariffs #TariffWars

here’s a curse word free version of “look it up” as requested by countless teachers and librarians 🥰😘

Describe yourself (current mood) with a building.

I came across an interesting article that broke down how much data AI chatbots collect. And wow, some of them are basically digital stalkers 🤦
