This? This right here is Texas at its worst — the poisonous place it’s become. I am so sorry for these poor folks, and justice cannot come swiftly enough for their tormentors.

Native Texan here. If you call KING OF THE HILL conservative, we’re going to have words. It’s about a guy who rejects in word and deed the abuse of his lousy father, adores and respects his wife, is always annoyed at his lazy conspiracist friend, and strives imperfectly to love his super weird son.

In college, amid a string of relentless personal bad luck, I hit Panda Express for Sunday night cafeteria's-closed dinner and found this message in my fortune cookie: "The greatest danger may be your stupidity." I laughed and laughed, and then I taped it to my computer monitor, where it remained.

If you haven't read this, it gets my highest possible recommendation. Infuriatingly gorgeous prose, brilliantly plotted, breathtakingly fresh, and it never, ever forgets to have fun along the way. Whatever it costs, buying this book counts as money well spent.

Charlottesville Community Bikes is amazing. If you have a child 12 or under, they can get a free bike once a year.

“This children’s birthday party is an absolute rager” is not a sentence I ever expected to utter, but here we are.

Apparently, everyone -- the CBO, the news, the actual numbers -- is lying to me, EXCEPT for John McGuire. (Never mind that the federal gov't doesn't cover undocumented immigrants. Some states choose to, knowingly, if they want to.) Phew! Glad we cleared that up.

Earnest bank employee Cher, eager to help a customer: HOW DO I GET YOU A LOOOOOOOOANNNNN

Me and, I suspect, a lot of other people watching the Doctor Who finale. (In a good way!)

If you've never seen REAR WINDOW, and you have Netflix, RUN DON'T WALK. (Haven't seen FRENZY or FAMILY PLOT, but the other three are also splendid.) (Assuming you can overlook how Hitch spent most of his time on THE BIRDS openly torturing his lead actress.)

Guillermo Del Toro, pounding his Oscar for SHAPE OF WATER on the table: "HOTTER! This time, the monster needs to be EVEN HOTTER!"

DANIEL CRAIG: It’s not enough. The silly accent is not enough. I must also have… A SILLY HAIRCUT (But seriously this looks awesome and I am so in)

Every time I see @abigaillarson.com's art, I just want to see even more of it.

My agent forwarded me the latest newsletter from, I guess, the founder of Substack, and it was just the weirdest mix of bragging, grievance, and sulky I'll-show-them victimhood about how Substack's DOING GREAT and everyone who criticized him was WRONG and ... I mean, why tell on yourself like that?

I can vouch for Nathan! Fantastic beta reader. And he’s a great writer, so he understands what it’s like from both sides. 5 stars. Would recommend.

Don’t tread on me. Tread on them! Those guys, over there! You know, the funny-lookin’ ones. Harder! Tread harder!

SONGS IN THE KEY OF SPRINGFIELD was on heavy rotation in my college years. God bless and keep this man for "Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off" and "Streetcar!" alone.

I've had a great experience as a beta reader for a couple of folks' books lately. I give tough but kind feedback; I won't mince words, but I try to always encourage. Looking to build book-editing experience with an eye toward a future side hustle. If you'd like a beta reader, reach out! #booksky

Our local Chinese place appears to be using AI on its web site, including for at least some of the food images, and I just lost my appetite.

You are not prepared for how much of a bop this song by Jawas is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Gi8...

May these possums shouting in Werner Herzog's voice bring comfort to your day.

Every time I see an ID Buzz on the road, I feel like it’s the exact opposite of a Cybertruck.

You guys ever try tea? It's probably the best way to combine water and old leaves that I've ever consumed

This, the recent News 8 Winsome Earle-Sears interview here in Virginia -- why are all these weirdo conservatives allowing themselves to be interviewed in too-tall chairs in big empty rooms? Like, tell me what passes for your soul is a speck in an endless howling void without telling me.

When I regularly rode the L in Chicago, I marveled at how public transit was the great leveler -- from people in high-end businesswear to the very troubled gentleman ranting, not inaccurately, about the dot-com boom. Public transit was there for everyone. No wonder these dudes fear and hate it.

Thanks to @captempestcomic.bsky.social for the best laugh I've had all morning.
