A Five-spot Burnet Moth with confluent spot seen at Prestbury Hill yesterday. This is apparently quite common in this species but rare in Narrow-bordered Five-spot and Six-spot Burnets. @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Arrived home after my trip down to Prestbury Hill yesterday to find a Painted Lady waiting for me in my front garden. A nice finish to cracking day @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A nice fresh Brown Argus seen at Prestbury Hill near Cheltenham yesterday, one of two seen. @savebutterflies.bsky.social @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social

After a busy couple of weeks I finally managed to get down to Prestbury Hill today. DoB, Marsh Frits, Dingy Skipper Adonis Blue, Brown Argus, Green Hairsteak, Common Blue and lots of Small Blue seen.

A nice fresh male Common Blue seen at my local spot by Wagon Lane Solihull earlier this afternoon. Also Speckled Wood(3), Peacock(1), Orange-tip(1), Green-veined White (2), Holly Blue(1) plus a few whites that flew past too quickly to ID. @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A Brimstone larva found on alder Buckthorn in my Solihull garden this morning. At least 20 eggs were laid by a female a few weeks back but I have only found 3 larvae so far possibly indicating a high rate of predation @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A drive down the M40 to Bishops Hill this morning produced Small Blue (20+) Common Blue (2) Grizzled Skipper (4) Dingy Skipper (10) Green Hairstreak (2) Red Admiral (1) Peacock (1), Orange-tip (1) Brimstone (4) and Green-veined White (2) @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A mild night with a fair bit of rain resulted in 60 moths of 31 species here in my Solihull garden last night including the first Hawk-moth of the year, a nice Lime Hawk.

A few pug moths amongst last nigths catch here in Solihull including this one that had me stumped for a while until a photo showed it to be a pale Foxglove Pug @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

My second ever Lunar Marbled Brown, after the first one back in 2019, and a pale/faded Pine Beauty, a species with just a few records here, were the best of 33 moths of 18 species to my Solihull garden moth trap last night @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A confused Small Tortoiseshell trying it on with a Peacock at my local spot by Wagon Lane Solihull this afternoon. @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A male Orange-tip unsuccessfully trying to court a female seen at my local spot by Wagon Lane Solihull this afternoon @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

I rather like the way that the sun is catching the hairs on this male Speckled Wood seen earlier today in my Solihull garden @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A nice fresh looking male Green-veined White seen in my Solihull garden earlier today @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Spent some time pottering about in the garden today during which time I managed to get photos of Orange-tip, Brimstone, Speckled Wood and Comma. Also saw a single Holly Blue that didn't stop @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Two different male and one female Speckled Wood in my Solihull garden this afternoon when the sun came back out of an unexpected cloudy couple of hours. Also a Holly Blue that got chased off by one of the male Specklies @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

The female Brimstone, a close look at photos shows it to be the same one, was back in my garden again today and laying some more eggs on the alder buckthorn @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Female Brimstone egg laying on alder buckthorn in my Solihull garden yesterday afternoon @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A bit cooler than expected last night here in Solihull but at least that easterly wind eased off a bit. The result was 18 moths of 5 species to my garden moth trap @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social Common Quaker - 13 Hebrew Character - 1 Clouded Drab - 1 NFY Brindled Beauty - 2 NFY Common Plume - 1

Spent some time in th egarden today and saw my first Holly Blue and Green-veined White of the year. Also a male Brimstone plus a female that investigated my alder buckthorn @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Lots of nice sun but a blustery and cool easterly wind kept butterfly numbers down a bit at my local spot by Wagon Lane Solihull this afternoon with 5 Peacock and singles of Comma Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Comma numbers lower (4) but Peacocks on the up (8) this afternoon at my local spot by Wagon Lane in Solihull. Also 2 Brimstones but no Small Tortoiseshells today @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Cheeky Squirrel in my garden this morning nibbling what looks like a cracker that is has pinched from somewhere.

I have seen small flies land on Brimstone wings before but never one as large as this Bee Fly seen on one this afternoon @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

My first Peacks(3) and Brimstones (4) of the year this afternoon at my local spot by Wagon Lane Solihull. Also Commas (8) Small Tortoiseshell(1), and Small White (1) @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

The clouds took a while to clear in Solihull today but when they did it was nice to find a few Commas on the Blackthorn blossom at my local spot by Wagon Lane @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Just 11 moths here in my Solihull garden last night, these being 6 Common Quaker, 3 Hebrew Character and a couple of Common Plume Moths. I was hoping for a better result after a couple of nice warm days but the clear skies overnight led to a big drop in temperature which probably didn't help.

After a run of cold winds, things warmed up this afternoon and a wander down to my local spot by Wagon Lane in Solihull produced 6 Commas, 2 Small Tortoiseshells and my first Small White of the year. @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

My first Small Tortoiseshells (2) of the year along with a conservative count of 9 Commas seen at my local spot by Wagon Lane Solihull this afternoon. Also a flypast by a rather tatty looking Red Admiral @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A milder night after the recent cold ones tempted me to run my garden moth trap last night for the first time this year resulting in 10 Common Quakers but nothing else @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social

Another 3 Commas at my local spot by Wagon Lane in Solihull this afternoon before it clouded over @ukbutterflies.bsky.social @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

After a quick flypast of what could have been either a Comma or Tortoiseshell the other day I saw my first confirmed Comma of the year earlier this afternoon at my local spot by Wagon Lane Solihull @savebutterflies.bsky.social @ukbutterflies.bsky.social

I still haven't put my moth trap out yet this year here in Solihull but I had my first moth of 2025 when my wife spotted a moth on the outside of the kitchen window. I went out to pot it and it proved to be a Dotted Border.

The usual 6 species of Clearwing that I see in my Solihull garden turned up to their respective pheromone lures in 2024, these being Lunar Hornet, Currant, Red-tipped, Yellow-legged, Orange-tailed and Red-belted.

Due to a number of reasons my garden moth trapping was pretty erratic this year and went to pot completely after August. A Spring Usher back in February was the only NFG recorded which brought my garden total to 384 species. Hope to do better this year.

Another December moth emerged last night from the half dozen I raised from eggs left by a female that came to my garden trap last year.
