And a well-edited text is a delight to work on because I don't have to slow down to check the issues and report them, it just so disrupts the flow of indexing thoughts.

Yup. A good indexer will report a list of 'issues', but it is up to the desk editor to take them on board. All sorts of issues - typos, punctuation, repetition, names, names, names. Recently had one where a bunch of well-known C18th names were spelled incorrectly, who knows where that came from.

All of this, for indexing too. AI can't do what a human can do in the publishing process.

Thousands of non-fiction books are published every year; we can’t index them all! Help us out by joining the Society of Indexers. Our training course will prepare you for a stimulating career in book indexing. Find out more at buff.ly/Mb55OKB

The buzz of chat when a book is launched. This was a book about ship design, so that's a good word in this context. Well worth a read. sailorshop.co.uk/products/the...

Excellent SI group visit to St Bride Foundation yesterday. We got a great insight into the history of printing, and we all enjoyed the chance to try it out for ourselves.

Memo to self: NEVER do an index again, let alone to a book as huge/diverse in subject-matter as Time, Tense and Genre in Ancient Greek Literature (co-ed. with Connie Bloomfield-Gadelha). It is worth remortgaging the family home to avoid such pain & pay a professional. global.oup.com/academic/pro...

To misquote Alice… ‘what is the use of a book without an index?’

And things you'd never thought of reading. Today I started indexing a super chapter about St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne, which I otherwise wouldn't have spared a thought for.

📢 What’s this? Rumours of a new print book from the pen of Blaire Squiscoll…?! 🇫🇷 Set in Paris! 🚪 a Frankfurt Kabuff prequel! 👀 Watch this space for details…

Dilemma - chase up some additional work for the rest of May or watch the Giro d'Italia.

Just ordered David Neal's autobiography www.archaeopress.com/Archaeopress... - frustrating that there's no index @archaeopress.bsky.social

That's our VE Day bell ringing in the bag. One quarter peal of Grandsire Triples done.

It is never to early to teach a baby how to use a book index. Chapeau to this! I hope the small person has been using the skills learned.

Getting ready for a Zoom about indexing histories of organizations. Not speaking, listening. Currently working on a history of an art gallery, hopefully some cross-over.

Fabulous illustration of a mention not meeting the question "Will the user find this useful when they flip to the page?" and thus being categorized as a passing mention.

I don't know who indexed Leonard Arrington's "Brigham Young: American Moses" in 1985, but I hope they got a raise.

Your indexer can sometimes spot errors in names that a proof-reader might not because they have experience in the subject area. Currently working on a text that looks like it has been through a spell-checker/AI that took out all the offbeat name spellings and put in the wrong 'correct' ones.

We need EVERYONE to see this advert for a Head of Operations at the Palace (£40-45k). Otherwise we might get some kind of numpty in charge. Please share. If we get 50 shares we'll post a video of #CuratorRob playing a hoover like a didgeridoo. hr.breathehr.com/recruitment/...

It is not difficult to make an index for a book about film, absolute minimum of titles, actors, directors, studios, sound etc etc. Readers notice this stuff.

Weirdness in the air when I'm working on a text describing Versailles and BBC3 is playing music composed for Versailles.
