This also shows the plateau-ing effect that @bcmerchant.bsky.social and others have been talking about - ChatGPT is NOT getting significantly better with each release as per this “AI can’t do x yet but it is exponentially improving!” marketing nonsense

There is research to show that making eye contact disrupts the cognitive resources used for complex tasks. This isn't autism research, but I think there's a good theory in here as to why autistic people find eye contact uncomfortable: it really is an overload. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I did NOT know that Siblings Day was a day borne of grief, and learning that fact has dissipated most of my grumpiness towards it. Rebecca Soffer of Modern Loss asked me to share some words for this lovely newsletter on what it feels like to lose a sibling open.substack.com/pub/modernlo...

Take a load off, Fanny, as praxis

I wrote about this a bit in my last book but it really shakes me that a defining feature of this catastrophic era is that we just keep going to work. We work through pandemics, we work through natural disasters, we work through economic calamity, we work through coups, we work, we work, we work.

Calgary friends, save the date for Kyle Flemmer's fabulous launch at Shelf Life books!

It was such a pleasure talking to you, Nikki! Thank you for support.

Being Not Brief, Not Bright, Not Gone, as praxis

How fast do real academics read papers? It was my own choice to attempt grad school + working full-time (during perimenopause😅) but I can't seem to manage much more than 1 annotated paper per day. Maybe more on weekends but I also need to take brain breaks. Am I ok or do I need to pick up the pace?

Mind you I had not seen this post when I talked to my local candidate... adding my voice to the chorus who wants strong social services rather than tax cuts. Support our public healthcare and education system, please.

Earlier this morning I met Lindsay Luhnau, my Liberal candidate for Calgary Centre at my door (actually I saw the team with their red signs out the front window and ran outside in my pyjamas because I wanted to talk to them) 🧵

“if I disclose my medical diagnoses to you as a disabled person, will you see me as more human or less human?” You may be curious about someone’s medical history, but you should understand the worries we have about disclosure from within a disabled body.

“More and more, #socialmedia resemble #digital panoptica keeping watch over the #social realm and exploiting it mercilessly. We had just freed ourselves from the disciplinary #panopticon - then we threw ourselves into a new, and even more efficient, panopticon.” - #Byung-ChulHan, Psycho-Politics

I know it’s a bummer to see these posts but $5 makes such a difference when more people can do it.

Scientists and advocates have been trying to raise the alarm about this for three years (at least), but ok

I have this thought every single day

“In times of crisis, we must all decide again and again whom we love.” — Frank O’Hara

“Every time you see a headline on “the cost of the benefits bill”, what you are really reading is “the cost of disabled people”.  My col. on Labour’s reported benefit cuts and the toxic narrative of the “moral” virtue of work. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

tuesday, but at what cost

“Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic,” they said. “That means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice and a third, a fourth. Then what happens?”

The jump from fascist goons disappearing US permanent residents to your US citizen neighbors, friends, and colleagues being disposed of in broad daylight is REAL SHORT

We’re going to have a masque, an incredible masque, a masque of death, even, if you can believe it. They say “oh you can’t do it you can’t do it in the castle” but we are going to do it I can tell you, we are doing it with so many colors but mainly red, red the most beautiful red you’ve ever seen

Apocalyptic figures.
