@mrjamesob.bsky.social After mystery hour last week, spotted the oldest Hat-Trick hat in the world at Broughton Castle- presented to Cecil Fiennes in 1859 in Dublin. Believed to be only the 2nd time a top hat was awarded. Apparently, the first hat-trick was awarded in 1858 but doesn't survive.

Broughton Castle. Shakespeare In Love, Wolf Hall, Fassbender’s Jane Eyre and, a personal fave, The Scarlet Pimpernel were all filmed here- amongst many others. It’s the home of the current Lord Saye and Sele who is a cousin of Ralph and (Shakespeare himself) Joseph Fiennes.

The ruined old Hardwick Hall has the most incredible decorative plaster overmantles that have survived the elements since the 1580s! Originally painted, you can see exactly what they would have looked like in the new hall next door which was built in the 1590s.

The last Pope called Leo (Leo XIII, Pope from 1878 to 1903) was the first Pope ever to be filmed, in 1896. He is thought to be the earliest-born person caught on film (born in 1810).

Genuinely blowing my mind…

An exhausted bumble bee, who’d been fighting against a sea breeze, taking a break whilst we had our picnic.

Is anyone who follows me here on this a food scientist? How nightmarish is it to go from 'idea' to product? If I said, "Make Tizer, but change it a bit' is that easy or hard?

My first medieval groat find, 13th April 2009. Edward IV, 1464-65 Class 5c Mint of London

Describe yourself with a building.

#Ashmolean museum in Oxford; too many mouth watering treasures to mention so just a select few here- including the lantern taken off Guy Fawkes under the Houses of Parliament. Then a visit close by to pay our respects at Tolkien’s grave. 🧙‍♂️

Didn’t expect to, but I really enjoyed #lastonelaughing Would love to see Jack Dee on a second series and Greg Davies, but just because I think he’d struggle so hard not to laugh.

#RoyalArmouries in Leeds. Free entry and some incredible galleries. Both historical and movie prop related. Highly recommend. ⚔️

I vote Agadoo. 🍍

“If she wants to know something specific, but doesn’t want people to notice her asking questions, she should simply make incorrect statements while in the company of experts. Pretty thrilled to have won tickets to #Hamlet at the RSC, some very cool goodies and a night in a 17th Century hotel suite. #LukeThallon is a once in a generation talent, as far as I’m concerned, and the set design & staging has to be seen to be believed. I’m a lucky duck.

A German word for being embarrassed by the actions of someone else is Fremdscham, or “foreign shame.” A similar word from Icelandic is aulahrollur, which is quite tricky to translate but basically means something along the lines of “cringe quake” or “douchebag chills”

Aw damn. Rip Gene Hackman. 😢

Ooh just discovered the term “set-jetting”- the trend of visiting film locations. 1st for us was the Braveheart location in ‘97. Then Rome (Roman Holiday); Ireland (The Force Awakens); Derbyshire (Princess Bride); Glencoe (Casino Royale); St Abbs (Avengers) to name just a tiny few! 🤩
