Joel Quenneville to be named coach of Anaheim Ducks https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6313208/2025/05/08/quenneville-anaheim-ducks-coach/?source=emp_shared_article

Leafs coach Craig Berube doesn’t think Anthony Stolarz will travel to Florida. Or at least not right away. No new update on him otherwise today from the coach.

Panthers unfazed by unfamiliar 0-2 hole against Maple Leafs — ‘So what?’ My latest for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩ ⤵️ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6341488/2025/05/08/panthers-maple-leafs-game-2-nhl-playoffs/?source=emp_shared_article

Paul Maurice said he didn’t get an explanation from refs on the Rodrigues embellishment call.

Not the finest night for the guys in stripes. The embellishment call on Rodrigues was ridiculous, but overall some missed calls on both sides. I can’t imagine either coach is thrilled.

This Panthers-Leafs series has been pure chaos so far.

Leafs coach Craig Berube on Stolarz and how he’s doing today: “He’s fine, he’s recovering.” But no timeline. Matt Murray backs up Woll tonight

Islanders GM search plus coaching carousel updates in my latest Rumblings for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩ ⤵️ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6338637/2025/05/07/nhl-rumblings-islanders-flyers-ducks-kings/?source=emp_shared_article

@StapeAthletic My understanding is the Habs’ response to the Islanders is that Jeff Gorton is in Montreal to stay.

@reporterchris Further to this, Stolarz is out of hospital, I'm told. My sense is the Leafs as an organization don't want to waste energy on this in the coming days, want to focus on task at hand up 1-0 in the series.

‘Intimidating player’: Sam Bennett becomes the villain again after unpenalized Anthony Stolarz hit. From ⁦@reporterchris⁩ and me for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩ ⤵️ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6336490/2025/05/06/anthony-stolarz-sam-bennett-nhl-playoffs-leafs-panthers/?source=emp_shared_article

NHL Player Safety looks at everything and so yes of course they are having a conversation internally about Bennett/Stolarz. But not clear at this point whether Player Safety thinks it warrants anything or not.

Craig Berube: “elbow to the head. Clear as day.” On Bennett/Stolarz

Matthew Knies didn’t see the Bennett play on Stolarz but said he hopes the league takes a look at it.

Sam Bennett was not made available to the media post game. We asked for him post game but Panthers PR said he wasn’t talking tonight.

Well I think we saw a bit of everything here tonight. Shaping up to be a wild series between Panthers and Leafs.

Knies with the breakaway goal, place explodes. 5-3 Leafs. They needed that one. Florida was pushing.

Balinskis scores to make it 4-3. Panthers are alive. The building is quiet suddenly. Timeout called by Berube.

Update from Leafs on Stolarz ⬇️ https://twitter.com/leafspr/status/1919574141063082230

Woll starting third period in net for the Leafs.

Woll in the game for Stolarz. Likely league concussion spotter asked to check on Stolarz.

Sam Bennett introduces himself to the series, a little, drive by knock to the head of Stolarz.

Leafs probably played a better period tonight vs Florida than they did at any point in the entire series with the Panthers two years ago.

@LAKings Rob Blake was on an expiring contract. It was his decision last summer not to talk extension. He wanted to let this season play out and then see. Obviously not an easy decision. Very appealing job for the next GM.

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice on the Craig Berube coached Leafs: “I think there’s more patience in their game than maybe in the past …. I would say a more mature game.”

Leafs optional this morning. I was looking to see if Miro Heiskanen was skating when I realized I was no longer in Dallas 🤪

Jets fans deserve that kind of wonderful moment. Feel for the Blues, that’s a tough one to forget. The razor thin difference between winning and losing last night in Dallas and tonight in Winnipeg. Crazy.

Holy mama indeed. Nuts. https://twitter.com/wpgmurat/status/1919204425832247420

@DarrenDreger How good is that 🇨🇦⬇️

From @MarkLazerus on the Avalanche and a soul-crushing ending ⤵️ https://twitter.com/marklazerus/status/1919014648478580771

And on Day 16, time to head home. Was thinking back and I think Avalanche-Stars series is top 5 that I’ve covered in my career. Two Cup contenders so closely matched. Landeskog, Rantanen, unreal story lines. The hype lived up. Now on to Panthers-Leafs on Monday night ! ✈️

Mikko Rantanen has been unlocked: ‘Mikko put the team on his back’ On an unforgettable third period capping an incredible series between the Avalanche and Stars, my piece for ⁦@TheAthletic⁩ from Game 7 ⤵️ [1/2]

DeBoer says Heiskanen and Robertson should be back in Round 2 but isn’t ready to say if either can be ready for Game 1 or not.

DeBoer: “That was an absolute gauntlet of a series.” Tips his hat to the quality of the Avalanche as a team.

Warm embrace in hallway just now between GMs Jim Nill and Chris MacFarland. As Nill said to me, this was a final level series. Crazy that one of these teams had to go home early.

Pete DeBoer now 9-0 career coaching in Game 7’s.

Final update: 11 points (6-5) for Rantanen in the last three games of this series. Ridiculous.

Rantanen empty-netter for the hat trick. Wow. No Heiskanen, no Robertson, no problem. The Dallas Stars win a Stanley Cup level series with the rival Colorado Avalanche, one of the best series I've ever covered.

Update: 10 points (5-5) in his last three games

Wyatt Johnston on the PP, 3-2 Dallas. What a crazy last half hour int his game. (P.S., I don't know about that penalty call).

pre-series billing I meant to say

Regardless of which team wins, the Mikko Rantanen Bowl has lived up to its pre-season billing and then some.

Update: 9 points (4-5) in his last three games. And this game ain't over yet.

Rantanan, spectacular goal, 2-2 game. Unreal. This building is going nuts.

Rantanen has 8 points (3-5) in his last 3 games after starting the series with one assist in 4 games

Mikko Rantanen, who else, beats Blackwood with a laser wrist shot, it's 2-1 now. 12:11 left. Buckle up.

Such a smart, poised road game by the Avalanche so far with so much on the line. They love track meets, but patiently have waited for openings tonight, not forcing anyhing, have guys back all the time, no cheating at all in their collective game.

That's seven goals in seven games for MacKinnon, leading the Stanley Cup playoffs in that fairly important category.

MacKinnon jumps on the ice as the sixth skater with a delayed penalty call on Dallas coming, but No. 29 dances to the net and beats Oettinger for a 2-0 Avs lead. No PP needed. Dagger goal? Lots of hockey left in third period still but...
