Rod Brind'Amour on tonight's defeat in D.C. - “We weren’t great, that’s for sure. You’ve got to give Washington credit, they played a much better game... Can we be better? Yeah, that’s the good news. We know we have to be better if we want to win."

The final horn sounds, and the #Canes come up short in Game 2 against the Caps. 3-1 is tonight's final. We'll go back to Raleigh for Saturday's Game 3 with the series tied at 1-1.

Tom Wilson, empty net goal. 3-1, Capitals, with 59 seconds to go in regulation.

Gostisbehere wasn't thrilled about getting cross-checked in the back, but he pops up, and just seconds later, the puck is on his stick for an anger-filled one-time drive. He'll gladly accept that turn of events.

Carolina needed something like this to keep their hopes alive, and they got it. Just when it was starting to feel like a description of tonight's power play was going to be "slow and stale", they break through with this.

The #Canes answer back with a power play goal! A blast from Shayne Gostisbehere cuts it to a 2-1 game with 10:34 to go!

Washington adds a power-play goal just 1:54 into the third period. It's John Carlson, making it a 2-0 game.

Third period time. If this game follows the same script as Game 1, I think we'd all be alright with that. Like Rod Brind'Amour and several guys said post-game on Tuesday and yesterday, it's only a one-goal game and all it takes is one shot to completely change things...

40 minutes down, 20 (or more) to go. 1-0, Caps. Just like Game 1, Washington was the better team during the middle frame, and they have the lead because of it. Some of the #Canes' big dogs are going to need to be a little more impactful in the third.

Annnnnd, the #Canes get a favorable break right back. That one is going to haunt Anthony Beauvillier.

The #Canes got a little scrambly after giving up the game-opening goal, but started to settle back in as we got closer to the media timeout. That's a tough bounce (on the Caps' goal), but sometimes that's the way it goes. Jack Roslovic rang iron just before the break.

1-0, Capitals. An attempted dump-in by the #Canes hit Shayne Gostisbehere up high and instead resulted in a Connor McMichael breakaway. 17:44 to go in the second period.

Second period time. The #Canes still have to kill 1:23 of Jalen Chatfield's hook. If there's one area Rod Brind'Amour's group will want to improve on this time around, it's in the dot, where they went just 5-for-15 to start the night.

We're done with 20 minutes of play in D.C., and it's still 0-0. A lot to the good that period for the visitors. For a large chunk of it, they were on their game. They're cooking in the O-zone again, and they've made it clear they're not going to be pushed around.

The forecheck is forechecking early on. 👷‍♂️

Jordo! 😤💪

Not a huge surprise, but Jack Roslovic is back on PP2 tonight. PP1: Aho, Blake, Jarvis, and Svechnikov with Gostisbehere PP2: Hall, Kotkaniemi, Roslovic and Stankoven with Burns It wasn't a particularly strong first attempt, but there will likely be more tries.

Just like Game 1, a pretty strong opening segment for the #Canes. A lot of pace and physicality through the first 6:54. Until those settle in a little bit, puck management is especially important.

The #Canes without Mark Jankowski (undisclosed injury) for Game 2 in D.C. - Svechnikov - Aho - Blake Hall - Kotkaniemi - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Jarvis Carrier - Roslovic - Robinson Slavin - Burns Orlov - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Andersen [Backup: Kochetkov]

Frederik Andersen leads the #Canes to the ice for warmups at Capital One Arena. Mark Jankowski (undisclosed injury) is not with the group. Jack Roslovic is.

@Canes The ultimate prize remains dangling in front of Brind'Amour and crew, but the job he's done thus far has been remarkable. In addition to being a playoff team each season, the #Canes have a .654 win% with him behind the bench, tied for third among all NHL teams during that time.

Rod Brind'Amour as the #Canes look to carry their Game 1 success into tonight's Game 2 - "I obviously loved the game, but we can always be better. That game is done. It's not going to have any impact on this game. We have to have our game plan and try to execute it."

No morning skate for the #Canes today, but Rod Brind’Amour just wrapped up speaking to the media. The head coach said Mark Jankowski (undisclosed injury) remains a game-time decision for tonight’s Game 2.

@Canes Jordan Martinook on last night's win... “You just kind of felt like it was going to come. Sometimes it’s hard to explain those feelings, but it didn’t feel like anybody was frustrated on the bench or anything. We’d hit four or five posts, nobody was too worked up about it.

Rod Brind'Amour says Mark Jankowski (undisclosed injury) is "definitely better today" and expected to be a game-time decision for tomorrow's Game 2.

Layers. Seth Jarvis is ready for a tip between the circle and the slot, Jordan Martinook is just off to his side, about to engage in a battle, and Jordan Staal is on the opposite side of the goalie, already tied up with a Cap. Good work from the forwards on last night's GWG.

Rod Brind'Amour didn't have an update post-game, but he doesn't think Mark Jankowski's injury is too serious. He expects to know more tomorrow.

@Canes "The puck came up to me at the point and I was just trying to get it to the net. I knew we had some numbers... I didn't know it went in until I saw Jordan Staal coming with his arms out, yelling at me." Jaccob Slavin describing his Game 1-ending shot.

One time for Slavo! 🙌

Isn't it fitting that that's how the #Canes win Game 1?! They threw pucks at net all night, and Jaccob Slavin's shot just 3:06 into overtime finds a home.

The #Canes in Game 1 in overtime! I think it's Jaccob Slavin, fitting one through from the point!

Our first overtime is underway in D.C. Let’s see if we only need one tonight.

We're through with 60 minutes and still have no winner. We'll go to overtime in Game 1.

The Caps had some trouble in their own end, and Rod Brind'Amour's group finally breaks through. After nearly 50 minutes of outstanding play from Logan Thompson and what felt like a billion blocks, Stankoven finishes from the slot.

Logan Stankoven ties it up for the #Canes in the third! It's a 1-1 game with 10:18 to go!

The #Canes have now hit the post/crossbar FIVE times tonight. It's a game of inches...

Third period time. The #Canes' final five minutes of the second were probably their best. Regardless of that, we know what their plan will be. It's just a matter of whether they can get one through Logan Thompson or the layers in front of him.

40 minutes down, 20 (or more) to go. 1-0, Caps. The home team had a much better period after the #Canes controlled the start. Washington has been blocking shots left, right, and center, already up to 25 on the night.

The second post of the night already for Andrei Svechnikov 💔 Third time's the third?

After what Spencer Carbery called a "pretty bad" first period for his team, the Capitals have responded accordingly with a much better second. They're humming right now. The #Canes needed a huge save from Frederik Andersen to keep it a one-goal game moments ago.

Washington opens the scoring. Aliaksei Protas picks his spot on the rush. 1-0 with 16:07 to go in the second period.

Second period time. The #Canes are probably looking to keep the figurative snowball they built in the first moving forward, but the Caps are a good team and will try to get to more of their game this time around.

Sean McDonough knows the brand. 🗣️

Jordo! 💪

A really solid opening segment for the #Canes. Several strong shifts in the attacking end, including all four of the game's shots so far. They've put Logan Thompson to work. On the other side, the Capitals have spent just 19 seconds of the first 7:02 in the offensive zone.

The #Canes during warmups in D.C., ahead of Game 1 - Svechnikov - Aho - Blake Hall - Kotkaniemi - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Jarvis Carrier - Jankowski - Robinson Slavin - Burns Orlov - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Andersen [Backup: Kochetkov]

The #Canes will be the first NHL affiliate of the ECHL's new Greensboro Gargoyles (@GSOGargoyles)! Hockey returns to First Horizon Coliseum this fall, and it's exciting to potentially have a few Carolina prospects playing there.

"Both teams kind of understand what each team is going to do, it's just, who does it better? It's a matter of who gets to their game quickest..." Jordan Staal ahead of tonight's Game 1 between the #Canes and Capitals.
