"Under one of the bill’s proposed changes, none of the significant investigations undertaken by the election commissioner in the last five years would have happened and some current investigations would need to be abandoned." #ableg #abpoli

"Masked security forces captured an opposition leader in the coastal province of New Jersey as regime officials continue their months-long crack-down against pro-democracy elements in the embattled United States. The arrest comes as the regime issued calls for summary detentions without trial."

unless I can buy "guaranteed won't get detained and sent to a concentration camp" vouchers for me and a few million other people that's a no for me dog

my "I'm not covering up my face to protect my anonymity because my actions on the goon squad are ethical and forthright" t-shirt has people asking a lot of questions etc etc

Incredibly cool, eye-opening story from @michellema.bsky.social + company. Read free for 7 days: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

Parents: just imagine your own daughter being attacked by a group of police for the “crime” of trying to protect her family from being kidnapped

Cops refused to mask to prevent the spread of Covid but happily mask to live out their fash fantasies.

It occurs to me that as a size man, maybe if Trump switched from the Mercator projection to Gall-Peters projections he’d be less interested in Greenland.

WSJ: China's exports to the U.S. "dropped 21% in April from a year earlier, while exports to the bloc of Southeast Asian nations known as Asean surged 21% .." @wsj.com www.wsj.com/economy/trad...

I missed back in the day when April showers brought May flowers

Jay Bhattacharya, the NIH Director, just said this of US research into the causes of autism: “I read the literature and it just looks like people haven’t really asked the question in a deep and honest fashion…what we’re going to do is give an answer that grounded in truth”.

Whatever impostor syndrome you may have once had, dispose of it fucking immediately. If these people run the country, you deserve that promotion, you can run for city council, you can start that business. If this is the baseline, shit, you can do surgery drunk in an alley and you will do less harm.

I’m very late to reading the US/UK deal Full-text : ustr.gov/sites/defaul... It’s not quite a deal. It’s an agreement to negotiate a deal.

In recent years, Canada’s #financial system has remained strong. But ongoing trade tensions are increasing the risks to its stability. Get the full picture in our latest #FinancialStability Report: bit.ly/4jFSJSF #cdnecon

Yeah, a lot of toys and other cheap crap is made in China. But you know what else is running out -- already -- as a consequence of what is essentially a trade embargo? Medical supplies. Tools. The clothing growing kids will need for back-to-school. www.wsj.com/economy/trad...

Before she was chosen as Trump’s nominee for Surgeon General, Dr. Casey Means launched a health-tracking company with a tech CEO...who’s now a key DOGE operative in charge of dismantling the IRS. (Also, it was backed by Marc Andreesen because of course.) www.theverge.com/politics/663...

So the NYT is reporting that Trump is going to announce a "deal" with the UK tomorrow—except the deal won't even get rid of the 10% tariffs on the UK lmao Looks like a reduction in the tariffs on British cars in exchange for the UK lowering taxes on digital services like Google

It’s weird to live in a time when basic principles like cruelty is wrong, cheating is empty & the idea that curiosity, generosity, originality, the satisfaction of earned accomplishments & loving intimacy are the center of a good life feel like countercultural concepts

There's a motion on the TTC board agenda next week asking management to look into fixing service bunching with AI. This is hopelessly naive on two counts. First it reflects responsibility for actually doing anything. Second AI needs a valid model to learn from of which the TTC is a very bad example.

“Children cannot protect themselves from contagious diseases; they are entirely dependent on adults for that. And right now, adults are letting them down.”

i think the biggest public relations coup AI boosters scored was calling it “AI.” people genuinely think it is an intelligence, and that when they query it, it is providing reasoned answers

i don’t see how we get out of this without a future Dem administration decisively striking at the center of gravity of Musk’s financial empire

Shorter version of Powell's opening statement at the Fed presser: 1. The economy was in pretty good shape prior to Tariffmageddon 2. Stagflation is now on the menu 3. Its' top three concerns are tariffs, tariffs, and tariffs

Thread.

It's rather illustrative of the city's disfunction that the outdoor dining spot in the foreground required all kinds of bureaucratic hoops, outreach and politicking while the trailer in the background was left curbside with zero community input, design requirements or public process whatsoever.

"Energy Star saves consumers and businesses more than $40 billion every year just by giving them clear information about the energy efficiency of products or buildings. And it does that at a cost of $32 million." - @usgbc.bsky.social's Ben Evans: wapo.st/3EYBwol via @maxinejoselow.bsky.social 🔌💡

Once again, the tech press is applying a clear eye and plain language to the administration that the establishment political press refuses to.

It's hard to parse Trump, but there's an interpretation (below) that says they're redefining "deal" to mean "a number I made up." Seems plausible, as it solves the pressing political problem -- it's easy to make up 192 numbers in 90 days. It solves *none* of the economic problems.

seems like the administration is objectively pro plane crash www.washingtonpost.com/transportati...

Something similar in function to ICE needs to exist, but ICE in its current form needs to be gutted and rebuilt. The sadistic glee and sneaking, furtive attempts to get around constitutional protections are evidence that a *huge* percentage of ICE employees are unfit for law enforcement service.

Davide Frattesi asked why he dummied and then shot the ball on his goal: "... I was thinking that, uh, if I don't score I'm fucked"

It will get lost in the torrent, but hard to overstate how scandalous this is. The national security advisor was communicating via a jerry-rigged version of an encrypted app that *functionally removed the encryption*, meaning an Israeli company could read all his texts. Throw in the towel, folks.

Trump: “We don’t do much business with Canada." The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative: "Canada has consistently been one of the top two trading partners for the United States." United States Census Bureau data: Canada was the top destination for U.S. goods exports in 2024.
