The "Starving artist" trope was started by ppl who didn't wanna pay artists (writers, painters, musicians, etc) & wanted it to seem a good thing. Artists suffering for art, starving artists, doing it for love only/shunning money - All myth turned folklore as reason to NOT FUCKING PAY US OUR DUE.

The thing that kills me about Romeo & Juliet is that Shakespeare's audiences knew it was a tragedy. Historically, tragic love stories are advertised as tragic. There's no twist on a sad ending, the sad ending is the reason you go to see the show. You don't bill as a Comedy and give a Tragedy.
