We now have the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccines session. First a review of the epidemiology of COVID-19 hospitalizations: www.cdc.gov/vaccines... Age continues to be a key risk factor for hospitalization, though rates have declined markedly over time.

The U.S. is pulling back its recommendation for pregnant people to get COVID-19 vaccines. This is a dangerous step backward. Our Ontario study shows just how risky COVID-19 is in pregnancy, and how critical vaccines are. A thread.

It appears Sec. Kennedy is getting ready to over-ride vaccine policy experts & scrub Covid shot recommendations for children, teens & pregnant people. Having a HHS secretary reset vaccine policy without hearings or expert advice is unprecedented, experts tell STAT. www.statnews.com/2025/05/15/c...

Excited to share our new @science.org paper! Led by postdocs Ruchao Peng and Xin Xu, we used cryo-EM/ET to reveal the influenza ribonucleoprotein complex structure and its strand-sliding mechanism for RNA synthesis, paving the way for new antivirals. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This is a really nice summary of the history of this vaccine epiellie.substack.com/p/the-diphth...

Looking forward to hearing more about this - and reducing uncompensated work in #PedsID! #PedsIDSky

This Thursday, I'll give a talk and a workshop at @childrensphila.bsky.social / @pennmedicine.bsky.social in Philadelphia, sponsored by the CHOP Training Program in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. Hoping to see lots of you there! #BikOnTour

This page from the Children's Hospital Association outlines how Medicaid is critical for children. Nearly half of children in the U.S. rely on Medicaid for their healthcare. The proposed cuts to Medicaid would be catastrophic for kids and also for children's hospitals.

Recently, I put out a call for people to share their personal experiences with measles, mumps, rubella, and other vaccine-preventable diseases. I heard from dozens of people who discussed their own illnesses as well as those of friends, siblings, and patients. www.statnews.com/2025/05/10/w...

Philadelphia friends! We SO NEED to celebrate science. Let's raise a glass to brains. Join us Wed, 5/21 for Pint of Science. I'll be opening for headliners Dimitris Boufidis, @audreydrotos.bsky.social, & Jacqui Barker. 😊 Tickets (to support the org, $2): pintofscience.us/events/phila...

Republicans have eliminated HICPAC, the national committee of experts providing recommendations to prevent infections in hospitals. We have known since the 1970s that infection prevention programs reduce infection rates substantially. Use @sheaepi.bsky.social & APIC as trusted sources of info.

< 72 h from launch → 48 placebo / active-controlled vaccine RCTs logged - now including all 5 COVID trials 1.43 M participants Crowd-powered, freely accessible evidence that buries the “never placebo-tested” myth. Browse or drop a PMID 👇 bit.ly/3EuYzqI cc @bradspellberg.bsky.social

Although this year's flu season is now ending, the dropping flu vaccination rate in children likely contributed to the highest number of pediatric deaths from flu in 15 years. Please remember this next fall when flu vaccines become available - they protect children (and adults) from severe disease.

1/n I don’t understand the new Dept HHS assertion that childhood vaccines weren’t tested in placebo-controlled trials. That’s simply not true. I did a quick (non-exhaustive) PubMed search and they came up pretty quickly. For example here’s MMR

Aetiology of febrile coma in Malawian children >350 of the sickest children recruited over 2 years with clinical, microbiological, radiological and long-term outcome characterisation. A huge amount of very valuable work. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

The equivalent of ~60 multi year research grants just fell overboard

This is a very concerning wake-up call. Improvements in vaccinations are needed to keep us from having to see significant increases in vaccine preventable diseases and their complications. #PedsIDsky #IDsky #Rxsky

#WorldMalariaDay 🦟 ICYMI: Dr. Sesh Sundararaman, from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, shared how his team used a prodrug strategy to address antimalarial drug resistance, improve treatment, & lead to new therapies. #IDsky #MEDsky Listen here: www.contagionlive.com/view/how-a-p...

#WorldMalariaDay2025: - In 2023 -597,000 deaths & 263M cases - 95% of these occurred in the WHO Africa region. We now have two authorized pediatric vaccines and several countries are rolling them out. But drug and insecticide resistance is rising. Funding is dwindling. The fight is not over !

It’s #WorldMalariaDay The good news: 2.2 billion #malaria cases and 12.7 million deaths have been averted since 2000. The bad news: after years of steady declines, progress has stalled. bit.ly/MalariaDay2025

After 8 months of peer review, our manuscript was published today @nature.com showing that bovine H5N1 viruses bind poorly to human-type sialic acid receptors. We now know that the virus is only 1 HA substitution away from efficiently binding human receptors. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Per @inquirer.com , it has "identified all impacted grants whose lead recipient is based in Pennsylvania or New Jersey. The list below will be updated weekly, on Mondays." Safe to say, it's a pretty heartbreaking list. www.inquirer.com/health/hhs-d...

Antigen identified that may finally allow us to determine the cause of Kawasaki’s Disease in Children. Truly amazing. Stan Shulman and that team at Northwestern and Japan have been looking for this for decades. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40122524/

Delighted our study (7+ years in the making) is out today in Nature. In a nutshell, 48 hours of antibiotics in week 1 led to impaired vaccine responses up to 15 months later in infants. We show (in-vivo) a probiotic can fix it #microbiome #science #immunology www.nature.com/articles/s41...

An estimated 263 million cases of malaria and 597,000 deaths from malaria occurred worldwide in 2023. Despite progress with vaccines and an increased number of malaria-free countries, malaria remains a formidable challenge. Learn more: nej.md/4c56oj2 #MedSky #IDSky

Director of the Nat'l Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) was summarily dismissed yesterday. So here's your reminder that birth defects kill twice as many American kids as cancer. But there is no St. Jude's for birth defects. Only the NICHD. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
