Mayor Bowser has proposed a FY26 #DCBudget and financial plan that abandons residents with the fewest resources to fend for themselves in the coming storm. Read the DC Fiscal Policy Institute’s initial analysis of what’s in the mayor’s proposal: loom.ly/QxmLq4Q

In the name of wanting to take a harsh policy stance against immigrants, in many different ways the reality is that they’re going to be punishing citizens and other immigrants that have been eligible in the past.” Shelby Gonzales, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

In Ottawa for a vacation & half-marathon -- and got to do an interview about why Canada's clarity about values of democracy and inclusivity is good for us in the US too. (We were waiting to see the King on his way to open Parliament.) Proud of doing the interview in both English & French.

“Democrats would be well within their rights to describe this administration and Congress as carrying out the biggest assault ever on American health care.” My @thebulwark.com colleagues on last night’s vote — and, really, this whole Trump term www.thebulwark.com/p/republican...

Thank you @sharonparrott.bsky.social and @cbpp.bsky.social for the analyses that make so clear the terrible human cost of the budget bill.

From @pamherd.bsky.social & I @nytimes.com: How Republicans plan to use administrative burdens to kick eligible people off of Medicaid, all to pay for a regressive tax cut. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/o...

“it would also mark the first time in the history of SNAP that the federal government would no longer ensure children in every state have access to food benefits” www.cnbc.com/2025/05/21/s...

Read this deeply reported piece by @citizencohn.bsky.social on the repeated failure of so-called "work requirements" for Medicaid. Thx to @robertgo.bsky.social for explaining your MI experience & Georgia Budget & Policy Center @gbpp.bsky.social for studying results in GA. @clasp.org

These 350,000 will immediately be described as "illegal" by the administration — among other inevitable false descriptors.

Medicaid cuts went through Budget Committee at 10:30 last night, with changes still not public (and still no full CBO score) Next up: Rules Committee at 1 a.m. Wednesday, then floor vote by weekend Almost like they don’t want you to know what’s in the bill www.thebulwark.com/p/how-to-tak...

The party of pronatalism & motherhood medals escalates its war on children “The GOP’s budget bill slashes the safety net to fund regressive tax cuts.” This transfers wealth not just from poor to rich but also from young to old. Smart take @crampell.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Stealing food and health care the most vulnerable to make the rich richer—that’s their grand plan www.dcfpi.org/all/us-house...

Honored to talk with @crampell.bsky.social about the proposed budget bill's attacks on children. As I said in the piece, the proposed budget shifts dollars away from our future - our children - to enrich a few billionaires and turn the clock back for everyone else to a poorer and sicker past.

So much appreciate both Part 1 and Part 2 (below) of @sifill.bsky.social 's terrific roadmap for resistance in this moment. Especially valued the overall focus on doubling down on ALL the tools (I'd add a few,eg, resistance by state elected officials) AND bringing in more people & institutions.

And since we’re talking about Biden’s record, I don’t care that he didn’t recognize George Fking Clooney. I do care that he recognized the gender and racial imbalances in the judicial branch. www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcn...

I would find it valuable in this moment, @jamellebouie.net .

The cost shift to states from these SNAP and Medicaid cuts is terrible for the people who depend on them …. And bad news for anyone who depends on state funding for education, or public safety, or transportation. Which is everyone. www.cbpp.org/research/foo...

Clear & forceful analysis from @citizencohn.bsky.social : www.thebulwark.com/p/gop-republ...

Terrific piece by Sherrilyn Ifill on lessons from the first 100 days with a focus on the resistance. Follows the advice of the wonderful @fatimagossgraves.bsky.social to find and celebrate the heroes as we move forward. sherrilyn.substack.com/p/the-next-1...

The House GOP tax/budget bill shreds the safety net to pay for regressive tax cuts. It may well be the largest transfer of wealth from poor to rich in a single bill, ever. Sounds pretty bad, no? Now consider what else is happening in the US economy right now www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

"This combination — top-heavy tax cuts financed by low-income benefit cuts — would add up to possibly the largest single transfer of wealth from poor to rich in U.S. history" says @bbkogan.bsky.social. Must-read this morning from @crampell.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

"They want to use money that pays for people's doctor visits, to pay for asthma visits—to give billionaires a tax cut." Neera Tanden, President of @americanprogress.bsky.social, joins Jen to discuss the GOP's proposed cuts to healthcare and Medicaid.

Thank you @nilc.org . Your post got me thinking today of my immigrant mother and all she gave to my brother and me, to the generations of college students she taught, to our community where she served in unpaid roles after her retirement, and to the Head Start program where she volunteered…..

At a time of deep economic uncertainty, the Mayor's agenda fails to embrace policies that grow DC’s economy from the bottom up and middle out, paving the way for worsening inequality. www.dcfpi.org/all/mayors-e...

🚨The House Republican bill will rip health coverage away from millions of Americans to fund a tax giveaway to billionaires. It was released late in the night on Mother’s Day to hide the damage as they rush it through.

As the NC AG points out, the loser of the Nov 2024 election for NC Supreme Court finally conceded, after a fed'l court held what should have been obvious to us all -- that the losers of an election cannot change the rules after they've lost. ncdoj.gov/attorney-gen...

NEW: Whistleblower records show that the NIH axed research grants – even after a federal judge blocked the cuts with an injunction. www.propublica.org/article/trum... 🧵

HUGE ruling—by a conservative judge—that is almost certain to be affirmed by the 4th Circuit and is unlikely to be disturbed by SCOTUS. Justice Riggs’ final victory draws much closer.

Trump says immigrant crackdown targets gangbangers, drug dealers, pet-eaters But the greatest growth in ICE detainees is among those without criminal convictions or even pending criminal charges. They're swept up only for immigration-related violations, which they may be in process of rectifying.

Incredible reporting by the Washington Post on the Trump administration's hurried, lawless effort to carry out illegal renditions to El Salvador - to terrorize people. (Including how they violated court directives.) Take a moment to read the entire thing: www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

Unions have gone all in for Kilmar Latest "Huddled Masses" from @adriancarrasquillo.bsky.social (And make sure to read the postscript) www.thebulwark.com/p/labor-goes...

👀 Stunning poll data coming out of - checks notes - Georgia: - 51.9% disapprove of Trump on immigration - 56.9% disapprove of Trump’s attacks on DEI - 80.9% want Trump to follow court’s orders This ought to make every Republican bootlickers in GA & all over nervous www.axios.com/local/atlant...

Best sign from yesterday.

This case was such a ridiculous overreach. I’m almost sad they dropped it rather than have a federal judge rule on it.

Very powerful piece that shows how the firing of career federal staff in the Education Department’s central office and regions is directly harming students, including Black students, Native students, and students with disabilities.

Take a look at this tracker from @clasp.org , which provides accessible updated data on harms from DOGE actions to policy-makers & journalists.

recent polling is just a total repudiation of the idea that full spectrum opposition to trump across every area was/is a bad idea

New polling just out from the New York Times is even worse for Trump on this issue. By a -21% margin, Americans disapprove of how Trump has handled the case of Mr. Abrego Garcia.
