Since last year, we’ve been tracking a proposed tidal energy pilot project by Orcas Power & Light Cooperative (OPALCO), which seeks to install a floating tidal turbine in Rosario Strait—part of the designated critical habitat for endangered Southern Resident killer whales (SRKWs) 🧵⬇️

Congratulations to our Intern/Restoration Technician, Samantha Hazard, on her successful completion of her Green River College capstone project. Her project focused on restoration efforts at Orca Conservancy’s Berrydale site, where she played a key role toward restoring this vital salmon habitat.

It’s Orca Action Month! Here are upcoming events: 🌱 Salmon habitat restoration (June 14th & June 28th at Berrydale Tree Farm) 💕 A Majestic Matriarchy: Honoring Southern Resident Orcas (June 14th at St. Joseph Parish, Seattle) 💻 Beneath the Surface: Southern Resident Stories (June 18th, virtual)

WIN BIG! Help us in our mission to recover the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales by making a donation to our GiveBIG campaign To show how much your donation means to us we are giving away an Orca Conservancy prize pack to one lucky donor!

J Pod made a surprise visit into Northwest Bay, Nanoose, BC! While Southern Residents frequent the waters around Vancouver Island, this seems to be the first time in recent years they have been documented in the bay. J51 Nova, J41 Eclipse, J62, and J39 Mako @intertidalkendy.bsky.social

Orca Conservancy team members spent some time with the T124As on Sunday afternoon! They were traveling with T100E Tharaya, T100B Freya, T100B1 Seird, & the infamous T49A2 Jude, who you may remember from his time spent in Barnes Lake 📷 1: T124A7 📷 2: T100E & T100Bs

Hello J63!! Earth Day was extra special this year! In addition to kicking off the first day of Storming the Sound with Salmon, members of the Orca Conservancy team got first looks at the newest calf in J Pod, J63! 📷 J40 with new calf J63 - taken by @intertidalkendy.bsky.social

🚨 URGENT ACTION ALERT: Submit a public comment opposing the proposed rule by NOAA to weaken environmental protections under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). 🧵⬇️

Happy Saturday! To kick off the weekend off, we want to share some good news! During this year’s legislative session we have been tracking a handful of policies that support orca recovery. A few of the bills we have been supporting have passed! These include:

We have some incredibly exciting news to share! J Pod has a new calf! Designated J63, we observed this little one traveling with J40. This will be her first known calf! While we have no immediate health concerns at the moment, we’ll continue to update when we can.

BREAKING NEWS! A new calf has been discovered with J Pod! The calf was seen traveling alongside J40 Suttles and has been given the alphanumeric designation J63!

Thank you so much to all of our volunteers and Free the Green for helping make our “128 Trees for L128” planting event a success! We had initially set out plant 128 trees, but thanks to everyone’s generous donation we more than doubled that amount and funded 340 trees!
