Here's a picture that a @kuow.org photographer took in Seattle yesterday, showing the ICE officers masked up in the hallways as they waited to arrest people coming out of their hearings.

So much happening is awful. The opportunity to pay young people in Appalachia to write, report, & tell stories is good. If you know a young person in the region, tell them to pitch! We've worked with student journalists and freelancers and people who have never published before.

They were once hopeful that outrage over Floyd's death would improve racial equity for Black Americans. Now they worry the federal government is taking the country in the opposite direction.

This bill would limit coverage of gender-affirming care as an essential benefit under Affordable Care Act plans and prohibit Medicaid & CHIP from covering the treatment. Earlier drafts limited this prohibition to care for minors; the approved bill extends it to care for all ages.

The Trump admin has been trying to prohibit ACA coverage of gender-affirming care for awhile. I broke down this complicated topic here. If this goes through, insurers could drop coverage for trans people entirely or trans patients could see higher out-of-pocket costs; along with marketplace cuts

1 in 5 trans adults are insured through Medicaid - and this is what happens when they can’t use that coverage for gender-affirming care 19thnews.org/2025/02/red-...

🤖 Artificial intelligence is being used in newsrooms to publish error-ridden stories with no human oversight. But journalists are drawing the line. Guild members have won enforceable AI protections in over 35 union contracts — one of the only national frameworks for AI accountability.

Right now, my colleagues are reporting crucial windows into the people most affected by this administration. Here, a mother from El Salvador tries to hang onto the life she's built with her family in Milwaukee. It's a must-read. We are a nonprofit newsroom — this story is funded by you, the reader.

“These are the plans of an authoritarian regime. They want to spend likely billions of taxpayer dollars to send asylum-seekers into war zones or to countries rife with human rights abuses,” @chrismurphyct.bsky.social told @theintercept.com

NEW: I talked to Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) + fired federal scientists about RFK's bizarre insistence yesterday that he hasn't fired "any working scientists" -- after he's fired hundreds if not thousands of them. Alsobrooks flat-out said he lied. www.huffpost.com/entry/rfk-fi...

Yessenia Ruano has been in the U.S. for 14 years. She's had twins, become an integral part of the school where she works and her church, bought a home, and checked in with ICE 17 times. Now she has a one-way ticket to El Salvador that she's still hoping not to use. 19thnews.org/2025/05/upro...

She’s devoted her life to teaching your kids — in a country that now wants to deport her. There are 15,000 immigrant educators who rely on temporary permission to live and work in the U.S. But they fear for their futures under Trump. Crucial report from @nadrakn.bsky.social

The Trump administration is pulling back from enforcing long-established fair housing protections for transgender people — but federal law still protects us against discrimination.

🚨NEWS: I've obtained a list of the Medicaid cuts in the Republican reconciliation package. The big one is that they're going to raise premiums and co-pays on beneficiaries at or above the federal poverty line ($15,650 for single people, $21,150 for a couple). That's what helps pay for the tax cuts.

Had some thoughts on last night's #MetGala. Who were your winners and losers?

A vocal and visible group of Catholic women are marrying faith with politics as they talk about their own brand of feminism — and Donald Trump. Fascinating read from @jennifergerson.bsky.social and Mariel Padilla
