Important and under-recognised issue being discussed at @cgdev.org today

Cycling fans who did not watch it live will enjoy the highlights of today's Giro D'Italia. A day to remember.

Investing in information for smallholder farmers is: - high impact for people in extreme poverty - staggeringly good value for money - hugely scaleable - increases agency of farmers Precision Development has taken another huge step forward. Kudos to the whole team. www.linkedin.com/posts/precis...

Germany & the Philippines created the first nursing Global Skill Partnership—where the destination country pays for the training of needed workers in the country of origin. @helen-dempster.bsky.social & fellow experts explore the partnership, lessons, & next steps: www.cgdev.org/blog/hundred...

🚨Development Economists!🚨Do you use Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS Program) data, which had been supported by USAID? IPUMS ( @ipums.bsky.social ) and the UN Statistics Division have a survey for you. I just filled it out. You can too. #econsky

The heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising fought for freedom and dignity in the face of unimaginable horror. Today, like so many across Poland, we hold a daffodil in remembrance of their bravery. Their memory compels us to stand firm against antisemitism and hatred in all its forms.

What does global poverty look like if we rely on the notions of poverty in rich countries like Denmark, the US, or Germany? And how should this perspective inform our aspirations for the future of global poverty?

This is all too rare in development cooperation - here is an account of how Precision Development (PxD) built, operated and transferred a digital service for the Government of Odisha. Under the government's leadership, the service has gone from strength to strength. www.linkedin.com/posts/precis...

We have so much to learn from Estonia

The market for ideas in the financial crime/AML space has been stagnent for years Miles's work is a big exception, and this piece should be self-recommending

Interesting piece, but it contains a complete misunderstanding of advance market commitments (AMCs). Taxpayers *don't pay* if the drug isn't successful. That's literally the point. They pay if the drug passes predetermined criteria, e.g. safety & efficacy, and proportional to the volume produced.

Cash transfers: they just work!

We've been talking an awful lot about how the Trump tariffs will hit the big players: the UK, China, Canada, France, Germany etc But it's time to talk about the ones who DON'T have loud voices. Because some of the poorest countries in the world are going to be crippled by what happened last night

Tracking Impact in Development: A VoxDev - @j-pal.bsky.social Webinar On April 8th at 1pm (UK), @paddycarter.bsky.social @britishintinv.bsky.social, Aparna Krishnan & Arianna Legovini will discuss how development organisations can track their impact. Register here: cepr-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi...

🆕 Agent Based Modelling Comes of Age @doynefarmer.bsky.social believes creating economic models that can make useful predictions may be the most important problem in economics today 🔖We summarise 3 of 2025's ground breaking papers 🔗https://www.inet.ox.ac.uk/news/agent-based-modelling-comes-of-age

Although he gives Gove's bad-faith criticism of experts too much credit, Ben's right to stress the limits of expertise in politics. One reason for this, I'd add, is that experts often use too narrow a palette of evidence: stumblingandmumbling.typepad.com/stumbling_an...

#Opendata has potential to transform research management and sector efficiency says new @jisc.bsky.social report www.jisc.ac.uk/news/all/ope... (UK) Open data about research management: a landscape review www.jisc.ac.uk/reports/open...

I refused to do a management course at Which? because it involved Myers Briggs garbage. The trainer rang me to ask why I didn't want to do it, so I told her it's evidence-free bullshit and about as useful as knowing I'm a Sagittarius Hufflepuff. She wasn't very happy 😁😁

I did the LSE Masters in Economics in 1989-90 - after two years working at the Treasury - and I can confirm that it was (a) very hard and (b) a very big step up from undergraduate economics.

(a) I am very old (64, on this measure) (b) Kraftwerk!!!

Strava is closing down data sharing with other apps. I like Strava, and I have paid for my account for many years. Not any more. I have cancelled my subscription. www.dcrainmaker.com/2024/11/stra...

A small but non-trivial hill I am willing to die on: The abstract of every empirical paper should include the core empirical findings--numbers included! Not "we find police reduce crime," but "we find that a 1% increase in police yields a 0.4% drop in crime." The abstract isn't clickbait.

I hand built the UK Government's first website (for the budget) in Windows Notepad on Win95. Typed all the HTML by hand.

Hello everybody. I have just joined Bluesky, after witnessing the deterioration of Twitter/X. I will post some of my recent material from there and I plan to migrate to this platform over time.

Welcome to BlueSky @voxeu.org ! A must-follow for economists, and another sign that the equilibrium is shifting.

Oh. I have just applied for a job and said - truthfully - that I am passionate about what the organization does. I am alarmed to see that this may be off-putting. File under: it is hard to get the tone right for UK or US employers, who expect different levels of hyperbole.

If someone is extremely poor, the best way to help them is nearly always to give them cash.

Fantastic evening of sport in the packed Stade de France for para Athletics, after an early morning as a volunteer on the para triathlon course for the athlete familiarization. Paris is putting on a great games. I am in awe of the athletes.
