This is so sad. I’m an editor and writer, not a biz-side person, but it’s pretty easy to see that the path to health for a newspaper is not throwing all the brand equity and talent out the window while insulting your readership

It’s a failure of journalism to do shit like this. Donald Trump has said that something will happen “within two weeks” at least 5,000 times in the past decade with easily over 4,900 of those “deadlines” passing with no action.

I'll buy an eBook copy of Accessible UX Research for the first five folks who are interested! I'll need an email address to send a copy to when it's published (currently in pre-order). If you're into user research and disability, this book is for you. www.smashingmagazine.com/2025/06/acce...

a legend for launching al alone, but he did so much more

Attending @ire.org's #IRE25 this week? Do not forget to add alt text to the images you share. Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to add alt text before posting any images. Go to "Settings," then "Accessibility." Select the checkbox for "Require alt text before posting."

I am excited for this, and excited for more people to learn @stacykess.bsky.social's vision for how news can and should be more accessible.

"Ned and Stacey," with a pre-"Will & Grace" Debra Messing, and Thomas Haden Church, post-"Wings." Almost 30 years later, I still remember the line where he said, "Take me, take me, take me to the circus."

People who don’t like AI aren’t in denial about how useful it is. People who like AI are in denial about how useful it is

Something that tends to get lost: when a piece of new information gets shared on social media, it most likely was reported and verified by someone: a reporter. You might not have learned it from that reporter, but the post from which you learned it probably wouldn't exist without that reporter.

I'll do one for each of my fields: Web accessibility: The term "ADA compliance" gets thrown around, but what someone means when they say "ADA compliant" is actually "conforms to WCAG." Journalism: The headline is usually written by a copy editor or web producer, rather than who wrote the story.

News outlets, even propagandist ones, are not legitimate military targets. Bombing a studio during a live broadcast will not impede Iran’s nuclear program. It’s not the work of the world’s “most moral army” and is not something the U.S. should support.

"In theory, it was an investment in market dominance, with annual profits of tens of millions of dollars awaiting the victor. In practice, the two Detroit newspapers were two travelers fighting in a canoe, unwilling to unclasp their fingers from one another’s necks to pick up an oar."

For @motherjones.com, I'm interested in hearing about grassroots projects in local communities that aim to help disabled/aging residents when climate disasters strike. Please be in touch at [email protected] if you have any examples and reposts appreciated.

Ocean Vuong’s beautiful writing and photography: “Unlike writing, which is a vocation mired with maybes, the camera, for all of its complex mechanisms, can only say yes. . . . Once the photo is made, the only way to turn back is to destroy it.”

Most people expect that if they visit a news homepage at any given moment it should be prioritized by importance, like it would be in print. In reality, homepage editors are often trying to keep the page “fresh” and surface new stories. This creates a lot of frustration and confusion among readers.

Adding: Hoffman entered public service because he could not get health insurance for Holly, now in her 20s, who was born with a disability and is now an amputee. He’s a relentless advocate. This morning his wife threw herself on Holly and was shot in her stead. MN disability community in shock.

It’s wild how quickly Andor slotted into protest culture, given how different the show is from other frequently referenced pop culture—it’s the rare sci-fi property that doesn’t just depict resistance, but grapples with necessary violence. No clean heroism. Just exhaustion and sacrifice.

I used to love looking at Newseum to see how different papers played national or international stories on the front page (in print). It's more difficult to do that with website home pages because the layout and order of stories on a home page can change several times in an hour, let alone a day.

the story today is of a profoundly low energy military parade being met with millions of americans in nationwide protests denouncing the dictatorial pretensions of the president

On this Friday the 13th, you can avoid this! Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to add alt text before posting any images. Go to "Settings," then "Accessibility." Select the checkbox for "Require alt text before posting."

It’s Friday the 13th. Be afraid. Be very afraid Because someone just posted a picture with no alt text. 😩

"This means leadership isn’t a reward. It’s a responsibility that is not anchored in power but in the ability to serve others. The most meaningful form of authority grows from the generosity of service rooted in love. This is how you create unity."

Yeah, if you're wondering why there aren't more stories about Padilla at news outlets right now, all of our websites are broken on the back end

Every elected Republican should be asked if they think the president has the power to send in military in to “liberate” a state or city from its elected government.

This is still a weird thing to observe. I of course think all images need alt text. The goal/purpose of telling anyone to add alt text (or to comment upon their lack of alt text) should be to encourage alt text, rather than to just use alt text as a justification to start fights with strangers.

This sure doesn't look like an accident. LAPD needs to investigate and take action immediately.

Yes, seats are still open, but they are going fast! We won't be live-streaming or recording, so this is it. This is the only way to be there and to ask questions.

When the discourse has gotten to the level of "let's hope and pray the armed national guard will be nice to other people," it should be an indicator that we are collectively IN A BAD PLACE

LAPD fired rubber bullets at Australian journalist @laurentomasi.bsky.social

Serious question. Why aren't y'all asking this of George W. Bush.

A lot of big breaking news stories involve visuals, such as timelines of events, photos, memes, and screen shots. All of those images need alt text. The photos coming out of California need alt text, as do screen shots of articles about what's going on. Every image shared about this needs alt text.

Please include alt-text in your screenshots of Elon Musk/Donald Trump Jr fighting posts!!! Blind people and other people who use screen readers deserve to know what's happening.

Those screen shots social media posts from X and Truth Social that are making the rounds? Those need alt text. Here's how you can do it easily. #a11y

I'm just glad one of these men has the nuclear codes and the other has all our personal data.

But people keep telling me that’s it’s women who are too emotional.

The @ire.org conference is coming up soon! If you have struggled in the past to add alt text, Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to add alt text before posting any images. Go to "Settings," then "Accessibility." Select the checkbox for "Require alt text before posting." #IRE25

For those who enjoy my show and cover songs in general this was a source of many pleasant discoveries in the first year of the program. Go for a deep dive …

I'm tempted to bring back Cover Songs Uncovered after discovering this delightful covers show. popcultureexperiment.com/cover-songs-...

Evergreen advice.

It's not too late to sign up for this essential and FREE training for @ire.org members. Tomorrow! www.ire.org/event/free-w...
