Important point from @anthonylfisher.bsky.social: Padilla wasn’t assaulted while asking about some mundane policy issue. He was shoved out and cuffed while Noem was gleefully talking about overthrowing California’s elected leaders by military force. That’s where we are.

Trump removed Medgar Evers, a fearless veteran and civil rights leader, from an Arlington Cemetery website commemorating Black soldiers. Now the Pentagon may strip his name from a naval vessel. This isn’t about “military preparedness.” This is about erasing history.

The neighborhood is getting ready for tomorrow

Countries that think U.S. democracy is functioning well are not generally ones where democracy is functioning well. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

An advance look at “On Parade,” David Plunkert’s cover for next week's issue. #NewYorkerCovers

This is what courage looks like. Don't let tyrants redefine protest as insurrection.

The "No Kings" organizers say that there are more than 1,800 protests planed for tomorrow.: www.nokings.org We'll have journalists at several of them, but you can tag @motherjones.com with your clips and tips.

One of the difficulties in determining the real story behind the Israeli strikes on Iran and coordination with the US is that Netanyahu and Trump are two of the most notorious liars on the planet. My latest. www.thedailybeast.com/how-iran-str...

Be clear on what she’s saying here: She’s saying that Trump is going to use the U.S. military to overthrow both the duly elected Mayor of Los Angeles & the Governor of California. I understand she’s not very bright, but, in essence, she’s saying the federal government has declared war on California.

Holy crap. And here in the US there's not a single competant cabinet member who can handle such an event. Is there anyone in the Trump regime who could actually not make this worse?

Ready.

YOUR ORDERS: JUNE 14 IS NO KINGS DAY! MARCH EVERYWHERE. See www.nokings.org & my FAFOPac.org Register a March! March in your front yard! March ALL Over America. This aims to be the biggest March in American History. PLAN IT. LFG Resistance! RT this!

The president of the United States in our time is not supposed to wield armed troops and even station marines on American soil because of political speech and assembly he doesn’t like, that is typically not allowed and no I don’t care if any of it is technically “legal”

If you are physically able to do so, get your *ss to your local No Kings protest this Saturday. Everyone. All of us. Rain or shine. No Kings. No Excuses. This is now a REQUIREMENT. The time to show up is NOW. www.nokings.org

Padilla: If this is how DHS responds to a senator with a question you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California.

It's a real bad day for democracy: - Law enforcement forcibly removes U.S. Senator from a Cabinet member's press conference - SecDef refuses to promise to abide by court rulings - SecHome uses language of occupation and liberation to describe domestic law enforcement tasks This is coup behavior

Holy shit. This is @padilla.senate.gov They just forcibly arrested a U.S. Senator.

Thing I need all Dems at every level to absorb yesterday: if someone pulls a knife on you, you are in a knife fight, whether or not you want to be

WORTH REPEATING THIS, ESPECIALLY #5. REASONS WHY TRUMP RAN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2024: 1. To reclaim grandiosity. 2. To avoid prison. 3. To grift, from wherever and whomever. 4. To mollify narcissistic injury. 5. There are NO other reasons. NO reason involves America, or its betterment.

The President of the United States this week has: - Restored the name of Robert E. Lee to a U.S. military base (Lee fought against the U.S. military) -Deployed Marines to an American city. - Shipped military equipment to Washington D.C. for a military “parade.”

Wow. New Quinnipiac poll finds Trump's approval at 38-54. And note this: Trump approval on immigration: 43-54 Approval on his deportations: 40-56 Can we say Trump isn't winning on this issue yet?

Idiocracy was a documentary.

I enjoy how Americans will post an image of a man bravely standing in front of a tank at Tiananmen every year to commemorate the wickedness of violence against protestors and then see a protester get trampled by a cop on horseback on CNN in LA and say “well what did he do wrong to deserve that?”

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving. There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later. They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

Americans have understood the threat of standing armies to democratic nations as long as there has been a United States—and even longer. They can easily become tools of repression against We the People. From the Declaration of Independence:

Anyone who wants to understand what is happening in Los Angeles should search "Reichstag Fire."

RIP, Sly Stone. A timely song here.

Media on left-wing anger: Never justified, hurts the movement, obvious radicalism. Media on right-wing anger: Just saying what's on their mind, finger on the pulse of America, the patriotic everyman.

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

I'm not really too hung up on whether the protests are peaceful or not. If armed masked men came into my neighborhood and started grabbing people off to where neither courts nor lawyers can find them, I might react pretty violently too. It's the kind of thing our Founders fought a revolution over.

There are many evergreen social media posts of the Trump II era, but my personal nomination is this from @brendannyhan.bsky.social captures the multidimensional degeneracy of our times:

ROBERT REICH: "We need a return to peaceful civil disobedience to counter potential tyranny. Americans locking arms and sitting in the way of armored cars, echoing tactics from the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam War movements to nonviolently reject Trump's handmade civil war.

Dem senator: Please, protestors, there are better ways to oppose the president Voters: Like not voting for his nominees? Dem senator: haha no no no. No. What I mean is we are writing a rap
