I will not be attending #NoKingsDay protests today, but I will be helping @gelliottmorris.com and colleagues with data gathering to understand how many Americans have shown out today. Please reply in the comments with estimated attendance numbers from reputable news sources; no city is too small!

Walz announces that Rep. Melissa Hortman is dead as a result of a "politically motivated assassination"

Game day folks. Time to go out and put it all on the line for democracy. A smart guy once told me: the crowd is the message. There are gonna be folks you disagree with out there. But the crowd, standing together as one other… that’s the message. Most of all don’t forget to have fun.

DHS confirmed that ICE and CBP agents will be on site “for security” at the start of the FIFA Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. ICE also reminded non-U.S. citizens to carry proof of legal status while attending the event.

Soft-power self-destruction watch, an ongoing saga: (Fulbright program one of most successful forms of US engagement with the world. Trump nihilists/ Red Guards mindlessly tearing it down.) www.nytimes.com/2025/06/11/u...

RFK Jr’s ACIP pick, Martin Kulldorff, said one of the most disturbing images from the pandemic was a toddler crying about having to wear a mask. I see toddlers cry about everything all the time, and I found it far more disturbing to see refrigerator trucks full of body bags outside of the hospitals…

Peaceful protests are not a threat to our country. They don’t need to be “quelled.” They’re what free people do in a healthy society. They should be welcomed.

The big crypto markup is still going on in the House Financial Services Committee. Rs are blocking any effort to block Trump from profiting off of crypto while in office.

Correct. This is superficially similar to the 1960s. (I was there.) This is more like 1933. (Reichstag fire.)

Even 46% of Republicans oppose this. Only 15% "strongly favor it."

I’m hoping to see many news stories about an old man with memory issues in the next 24 hours.

<Thread> I figure I need to explain how extreme and irresponsible is the June 7 Memorandum federalizing the National Guard and authorizing regular armed forces. Those saying anything in support of this action may not realize what they’ve gotten into. (It will also escalate from here.) Preview⤵️

Premise of this post: When Americans hear "fascism," they usually think "Hitler." For Godwin's law + other reasons, that's an over-the-top analogy. Instead IMO we should think "Mao." Imminent threat for US is more like Chinese Cultural Revolution. fallows.substack.com/p/what-to-le...

Marines did not enlist and were not trained to be used as Trump’s personal domestic gestapo. If your mission is to terrorize and intimidate civilians, your orders are unlawful, and your duty is to refuse them. Marines swore an oath to defend the Constitution, and now’s the time.

I think there ought to be large, planned, and peaceful demonstrations in many of America’s major cities with music and entertainment and speakers. But spontaneously showing up to scream at the National Guard increases the risk of people going bonkers.

To perhaps brighten your day, how about a calming flower on the bush anemone 'Elizabeth' (Carpenteria californica 'Elizabeth') in my backyard? Native to Fresno County in California, the plant requires absolutely no supplemental irrigation now that it's made it through two winters.

The collective silence of the former Presidents right now is unnerving.

Headline/chyron if this were happening in a foreign country: "Far right president calls for arrest of opposition party provincial governor, raising further questions about democracy & the rule of law" Headline/chyron when this happens in 🇺🇸: "Trump Takes Questions As He Returns To The White House"

Major General Randy E. Manner, former Acting Vice Chief, National Guard Bureau statement to Fox News: "This is an inappropriate use of the National Guard and is not warranted.”

“Threatening to send the U.S. Marines into American neighborhoods undermines the mission of our service members, erodes public trust, and shows the Trump administration does not trust local law enforcement.”

This is the essence.

One of grants frozen at Cornell: $6.7M (4 yrs) to develop heart pumps for babies born w/ heart defects. It took decades of work to get to point of prepping device for in-human clinical trials. No private company could do this. The cruelty of the Trump administration is heartbreaking. So to speak.

Both statements are from last night. Note difference between how Trump characterizes conditions in LA ("RIOTS AND LOOTERS"), vs how the LAPD does ("Peaceful Protests")

Some members of the viewing audience welcome this reality show nonsense, sadly.

Breaking: ABC News says senior national correspondent Terry Moran "has been suspended pending further evaluation." This since-deleted tweet is the reason for the suspension:

The most vital thing you can do right now is spread this message offline to normies. There is no "unrest", there's a protest. It has 400 people. LA does worse when the Lakers come in 3rd in a season.

Fascists want to provoke violence so they can justify crackdowns and get some good footage to distort for state propaganda outlets

I wrote this musingly but the more I think about it, the more I think it's a serious question. A few things need to happen politically & legally for Trump to do this. But it's possible AND it could ultimately benefit Elon...which might also explain why this whole fallout feels weirdly staged. 🧵 1/
