A fresh Pyramidal Orchid in the evening light

Some fantastic news from Norfolk today - www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk/news/first-o...

Fantastic study of Goshawk first-winter dispersal, by @btobirds.bsky.social and FE. They’re surprisingly sedentary!

Some nice Bee Orchids brightened up an otherwise anxious day at the hospital.

Positive news for Coa Valley #rewilding #ornithology www.endangeredlandscapes.org/news/bin-day...

A real sign of global warming this exceptionally hot spring is that Ling, Calluna vulgaris, is already in flower and being used by Silver-studded Blues in Dorset. Normally it flowers in August!! @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Interesting survey, thoughtful and not too onerous to complete. #ornithology

Are you a #birdwatcher? Take part in a study on #BIRDWATCHING & #BIRDCONSERVATION Help understand birdwatchers & birdwatching better, use this opportunity for self-reflection about your own birdwatching experience Link/QR forms.office.com/e/wTCy8ghY9U pls share @rspb.bsky.social @bou.org.uk

Captive breeding - apparently undertaken without fully understanding or remedying problems in the wild. Genetic drift (though captivity removes strong natural selection filtering less fit traits that affect migration survival). #Ornithology

Neat new paper 🧵 showing that Long-billed Curlews respond to Prairie Dog predator alarm calls #ornithology

There is still some time to apply! PhD based in Białowieża, but fieldwork in the Swiss Alps included! More information: t.co/iZTYJ5DCgQ

Calf of Man Ornithological Volunteer: Autumn Migration Trainee ringing permit or higher, 2-30 September, exciting opportunity 👇 @ueaceec.bsky.social #ornithology

Can you help us monitor butterfly populations across the UK? Join the Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey team, these fantastic volunteers survey 1km squares for butterflies starting July 1st. Find out more and check for available squares near you ⬇️ buff.ly/74kCfjO

The Earl of Caithness quoting tropical peat swamp evergreen forest study, to argue rewetting of moorland doesn’t reduce fire risk 🙄. Embarrassing attempt to cherry pick evidence.

Natural England didn’t consider a Tropical Peat Swamp Forests study, when examining whether rewetting temperate / boreal blanket bog / moorland reduced fire risk. I wonder why!? Andrew Gilruth convinced it’s a deliberate conspiracy to ignore inconvenient science.

This BNG bullshit is where the Planning & Infrastructure Bill pt3 will take us. Irreplaceable habitats lost, access to green spaces lost, while corners of faraway fields get rammed with plastic-wrapped money trees of which 1% survive, while developers & offset schemes cash in. Sickening.

Rewilding needs top carnivores. Check out this excerpt from @jonnyhhanson.bsky.social book on how people can learn to live alongside bears, wolves and lynx www.rewildingmag.com/how-wildlife...

Our latest research shows spot-on flea treatments on dogs are released into water when dogs swim even 28 days after treatment - in contrast to the label which suggests dogs can safely swim 48 h after treatment. www.newscientist.com/article/2482...

Lucerne, Medicago sativa in grassland on former cultivated site for the #WildflowerHour #PeaFamily challenge. @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

Conservationists call for Lake District to lose Unesco world heritage status www.theguardian.com/environment/... interesting that there's no comment from James Rebanks. FWIW I wrote this back in 2017 anewnatureblog.com/2017/05/22/s... What's changed since then is that CAP subsidies have gone.

The farce of Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified “responsibly” farmed Sea Bass and the greenwashing by UK supermarkets.

Fascinating article: long-term #Salmon pit-tagging, monitoring & survival analysis on River Frome Dorset by @gwct.org.uk shows problems at sea, plus the need for better catchment management to reduce agricultural run off and pollution. www.missingsalmonalliance.org/news/working...

Man Orchid for tonight’s #Wildflowerhour #OrchidChallenge. In contrast all the local Bee Orchids rosettes that had over-wintered were burnt off in the drought.
