I hiked up to the snow in the San Gorgonio Wilderness area today. There was a wildfire here five years ago and still no sign of recovery of the pine trees; not a single sapling in sight. Apparently, the fire was so hot, the pine cones from which new growth would start were all burned.

BlueSky has not evolved into the Twitter replacement that I had hoped. I am not sure how their algorithms work, but content from those I follow often does not appear in my feed (and presumably vice versa).

This thread reminded me of the work of my late father as a medic and epidemiologist in Papua New Guinea in the 1960's. In the highlands of PNG endemic goitre was very common and in some remote valleys endemic cretinism was also common. The Jimi Valley was one such area. 1/n
