Harvard has centres in Shanghai, Naples, Athens, Paris, Mumbai, Tokyo, Sao Paulo and two dozen other cities outside the US, so if there is one university that could shift to a global model in a crisis this is it.

Trump just revoked the ability for foreign students to enroll at Harvard. Every foreign student, which is in the thousands, enrolled for next year at Harvard will not be able to continue studying if this isn't challenged in court. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/u...

Wow, Pocket is shutting down. I barely used it personally, but feel like it was such a background mainstay.

Unjustifiable acts do not justify unjustifiable acts. Hate does not justify hate. Violence does not justify violence.

This, on point, all of it, retweet

Horrific murder of two Israeli embassy staffers in the middle of DC. This kind of violence is illegal, immoral, inexcusable and of course - if the chant of ‘free Palestine’ by the alleged shooter is true - solves nothing and helps zero Palestinians.

US Homeland Security secretary Noem confirms two Israeli Embassy members were killed in a shooting: "Two Israeli Embassy staff were senselessly killed tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington DC. We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share." x.com/Sec_Noem/sta...

The US government mirror accounts here are not fast enough 😔😔😞😞

This effort to me gives off the ICE detention of Mohsen Mahdawi, who was taken after a citizenship interview appointment.

Founder and executive director of a legal advocacy group, Camille Mackler, suggests ICE is "basically circumventing due process"

The Intercept: ICE agents camp outside federal buildings across the US to make arrests "immediately after judges dismiss their immigration cases," @akelalacy.bsky.social @noahhurowitz.bsky.social and others report theintercept.com/2025/05/21/i...

Still no aid delivered or distributed to people in need in Gaza: "None of this aid - that is a very limited number of trucks - has reached the Gaza population," said Antoine Renard, country director of the World Food Programme www.reuters.com/world/middle...

Aid routes Israel provided were deemed unsafe... delaying distribution: "UN and its partners have been engaging with the Israeli authorities to identify the best possible route from Kerem Shalom onward into Gaza to ensure the flow of aid is not disrupted or suspended." www.unocha.org/news/todays-...

Israel's Netanyahu also calls US president Donald Trump's mass forced relocation plan—which would amount to international human rights violations—for Palestinians in Gaza as "correct" and "revolutionary" www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...

Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says all of Gaza will be under Israel’s control by end of offensive in news conference www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...

In case anyone wondered, the US government has experts on the legal definition of genocide who could advise the President if there were a properly functioning executive branch.

All killings are terrible but instead of "stories talking about it" try facts. @africacheck.org first tackled false claims of a 'white genocide' in 2013. If you go through this report - as relevant today as in 2013 - the facts are clear & picture remains the same. africacheck.org/fact-checks/...

Wow

"Women and girls with disabilities face especially acute risks - disproportionately experiencing neglect, heightened exposure to violence, and significant barriers in accessing essential services," the independent UN experts said in a statement about Gaza.

"Women continue to mourn profound losses while caring for families with little to no access to water, medicine, adequate food, sanitary products, or sexual and reproductive health care," the independent UN experts said about the situation in Gaza.

UN experts urge peace to protect women in Gaza, citing "over 28,000 women and girls have been killed, thousands have been injured and nearly 1 million displaced" and "Close to 13,000 women are now single heads of household." www.ohchr.org/en/press-rel...

Incredible — After shooting at a group of diplomats from nearly *two dozen* countries, the Israeli military says it "regrets the inconvenience caused." The diplomats were from China, Brazil, India, Russia, Japan, Canada, Mexico, France, Türkiye, Spain, Portugal, Jordan, the UK, Egypt, and more.

Israeli forces by opened fire towards an EU delegation on an approved visit to #Jenin in the #WestBank earlier today. The IDF said they were approaching an area they weren’t allowed to be, so “warning shots” were fired AT EUROPEAN DIPLOMATS.

This doesn't match up: FT reports "scores of foreign mercenaries have landed in Israel" and aid sites will involve "Israeli military and private contractors," but GHF claims it is "not militarised. The distribution will be managed exclusively by civilian teams.”

What's clear from this FT report, among others, is the Gaza Humanitarian Fund doesn't seem to have the apparatus to feed Palestinians who need help immediately. It appears it's replacing UNRWA, barred from operating in Gaza, but GHF is making it up as it goes—dangerous with people's lives at risk.

So fascinating, so many questions: "But there is no clarity to how the GHF is being funded. No foreign donors had contributed as of last week [...] A person familiar with GHF’s operations said donors had already committed to at least $100mn but did not name them."

👀 Columbia University acting president publicly acknowledges Mahmoud Khalil, student held in ICE detention for pro-Palestine activity on campus

One day after being booed, Columbia President Claire Shipman at university-wide graduation says international students shouldn't be targeted by government for free speech. "And let me also say, that I know many in our community today are mourning the absence of our graduate, Mahmoud Khalil."

MSF emergency coordinator in Khan Younis: “This plan is a way to instrumentalize aid, making it a tool to further Israeli forces’ military objectives."

BREAKING: Following today's emergency hearing, Judge Brian Murphy orders the Trump administration to "maintain custody and control of class members currently being removed to South Sudan or to any other third country," such that he could order their return if needed.

New update: US federal judge Brian Murphy says in virtual hearing, "I have a strong indication that my preliminary injunction order has been violated" and officials could be held in contempt for reported US deportation of migrants to South Sudan www.reuters.com/world/immigr...

"This engagement increasingly looks like an effort to frighten immigrants with the prospect of exile in far-off, and sometimes exceptionally dangerous, countries," @nickturse.bsky.social writes.
