When the feds call up the national guard, can the state choose which unit is mobilized? It would be funny if California offered all-Queer and all-women units first, to show the DoD how good they can be.

Today has been fun and all, but...a reminder: Any theory of executive power in the American Constitution must begin from the hard-fought recognition in the 17th century that republicanism is superior to the politics of "who has the King's ear?" and "who has fallen from favor in the King's court?".

All government is tradeoffs, which DOGE doesn't get. Accountability may be good or bad, but it's inefficient. Size of government, efficiency, equity, effectiveness, accountability...these are all in tension. Subtlety, not chainsaws, makes government better.
