Continuing long-range smoke transport from devastating Canadian #wildfires across the Atlantic with another huge plume reaching Europe in the next few days. #CopernicusAtmosphere AOD forecast (from 07/06 00 UTC) atmosphere.copernicus.eu/charts/packa... @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social @ecmwf.int

Bloomberg reports that EU emissions are up so far this year. I can confirm this. robbieandrew.github.io/country/?cou...

There is a direct link between the activity in this image, showing the wanton burning of fossil fuels, and the death of coral reefs around the world. This here is the leading cause of emissions in many countries. We are firmly on a highway to hell as we pass through 1.5°C of heating!

This is such a traumatizing process. These poor animals are under constant stress from poaching and now us trying to protect them. Humans honestly need to wake the fuck up. Whatever the hell happened to living in harmony with everything that we share this planet with! My anger is an understatement

Just out: Norway's emissions declined by 3.5% in 2024 (3.8% if adjusted for the leap year). www.ssb.no/natur-og-mil...

On an annualized basis, the rate of CO2 entering the atmosphere is increasing again. It's not a record, but things are definitely going in the wrong direction again ...

Reminder from last year: "We find that the economic damages resulting from climate change until 2049 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙙 and that these greatly outweigh the costs required to mitigate emissions in line with the 2 °C target." [Emphasis mine] #ClimateCrisis

When we talk about #Adaptation, which we urgently need to, given our heating trajectory, it is 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 to understand these concepts👇🏻 #ClimateLiteracy

NASA scientists describe ‘absolute shitshow’ at NASA GISS as the Trump admin. seeks to eliminate the storied lab as an "independent entity" in favor of a broader, as-yet fuzzily-defined Earth modeling effort. www.cnn.com/2025/06/05/c...

This is a “big fucking deal” as James Hanson would say. #CliamteCrisis

it's disaster season, and folks are — understandably — worried about what it's going to look like with cuts at federal agencies. i wrote up a little how-to guide on things you can do to prepare and what to keep an eye on:

Tune out the blah blah. This right here is why the climate crisis continues unabated and why we will cross 2ºC Emissions MUST fall by 5.5% THIS year and EVERY year thereafter until 2030 if we are to stand a remote chance of staying below 2ºC - there is ABSOLUTELY no sign of this level of reduction.

Breaking News! Code UFB!!! The 36-month running average for planetary albedo hit yet another new low with the latest data released by CERES, now at 28.72%. Why? Melting polar ice & glaciers, changes in cloud cover, deforestation & land use changes, soot & black carbon ...

May global climate warming stripes. 🔥🔥🔥

Without on-purpose built resilience, extreme events take large percentages of small businesses below a tipping point beyond which full recovery is just not possible resulting in permanent loss. The level of unpreparedness for what is fast heading our way (2°C) is staggering! The losses WILL mount!

Our study just out in Nature: the extreme North Atlantic heat in summer 2023 was mainly due to weak winds causing shallow mixed layers, which heat up more quickly. Global warming is causing a trend toward shallow mixed layers, making such extremes more likely. 🌊 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We honestly underestimate the disruption from extreme events. Blatten a week later. www.swissinfo.ch/eng/various/...

Friends. #WildFires are burning in Canada. Why the F is fire smoke from Canada an annual thing for NYC. Also - NB - air quality alert day for a sizable chunk of the US tomorrow. Seriously. What person appreciates the chocking haze ?

Project 2025 isn’t just influential in Washington. Its friends and creators are literally running the show, according to a new analysis from @DeSmog buff.ly/xyzwHZE

This from #C3SGA25 this morning. We absolutely *must* move on this at speed, especially for the "3.3-3.6 billion people who live in hotspots of high vulnerability to climate change." (IPCC, 2022) #ClimateCrisis #Adaptation

"While we can come back safely and build back better after most river flooding, there is no coming back for land that coastal erosion has simply taken away or which a rising sea level has put permanently or frequently underwater." "Which means in some places... 1/2 #ClimateCrisis #SeaLevelRise

Lol

Really liked Johan Rockström’s tone in this presentation from a few days ago. Highly recommend. #ClimateCrisis

I dug into the NSF cuts & other ways that the Trump administration is shutting down climate science. “Basically it’s a shit show,” Princeton’s Michael Oppenheimer says, “and how bad a shit show it is will depend a lot on what happens in the courts and Congress over the next few months.”

Preliminary from the ERA5 dataset has May ending at 1.39ºC above the 1850-1900 average. This is the first month since July 2024 that was below 1.5ºC in this dataset. The current 12-month running mean (Jun '24 - May '25) is 1.57ºC. Final confirmation of this will be later this week or early next.

Reminder (IPCC, 2022) “In the near-term (2021-2040) risks are highest where species and people exist…in close association with ice or seasonal rivers (high confidence)” There is an urgent need to help 15m people understand the risks they face as we pass through 1.5°C of heating. #ClimateCrisis

MP @melanieonnmp.bsky.social says the new Viking carbon capture cluster is a “game-changer” for the Humber. These clusters are centred around billions in public money for *new* fossil fuel plants—which will be as bad for the climate as coal. Here’s why 🧵1/6 #VikingCCS #FossilGas #NetZero

Two extreme weather events on the African continent: Sudden hailstorm lashes Egypt's Alexandria (www.france24.com/en/live-news...) Death toll from Nigeria flash floods rises to 151 (www.bbc.com/news/article...) #ClimateCrisis

It's been death by a million papercuts to U.S. weather forecasts by the Trump administration, but yesterday's detailed 2026 budget feels like a deathblow. In today's @nytimes.com I ask: How far can we degrade our hurricane forecasting before people end up dead?

As billions of people will face extreme heat, more and more cities will have to copy what Barcelona is doing 👏🏻 We have *absolutely* no time to waste in starting urgent #adaptation programmes. #ClimateCrisis #Heatwaves

It's important to know that a #heatwave isn't just about the reading on a thermometer over some days. Heatwaves have cascading far-reaching impacts across so many sectors of society. This is very well illustrated here! Source: www.worldweatherattribution.org/wp-content/u... #ClimateCrisis

NEW from @wwattribution.bsky.social: Over the past 12 months "4 billion people (about 49% of the global population) experienced at least 30 extra days of extreme heat (hotter than 90% of temps observed in their local area over the 1991-2020 period)" www.worldweatherattribution.org/heat-action-...

Fossil fuel execs have talked for years about how they are "saving" Africa and solving energy poverty. Probably best to listen to Africans on that score: drilled.media/news/total-m...
