Four-spotted Chaser. #dragonfly

Some good answers to this. CONTENT WARNING If you were around in the 1970s or 1980s you may be reminded of some God-awful people you have been trying to forget.

Civil servants will privately tell you that a major reason every process is slow, full of redundant checks and forms is that, "government accidentally granted benefit to someone who shouldn't get one" is a front page tabloid story, and "government was annoying, slow and painful for citizen" is not.

Omg

Willow Emerald, my earliest ever capture in June! @marcheath.bsky.social @britishdragonflies.bsky.social @wildlifebcn.org

Good morning, everyone. Daphne has cancelled Monday in favour of sitting indoors in the air conditioning, and instructs you all to do the same.

Thanks to a tip off from @epollard.bsky.social I got up early before the traffic started to look at Moon Carrots, Seseli libanotis, on Limekiln Hill #Cambridge. >50 plants in 130m of dangerous verge. Alongside white Greater Knapweed, Wild Parsnip, Lucerne & a few Wild Carrots. 🍒🏘️ #WildflowerHour

#WildFlowerHour Biting stonecrop enjoying the sun!

Could not resist a little Lindisfarne orchid montage for #wildflowerhour! 📸 Common Spotted, Northern Marsh, Pyramidal (x2), Frog, Early Marsh, Lindisfarne Helleborine, Marsh Helleborine & Com Twayblade. @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

Brome for the #grasschallenge #wildflowerhour #yorkshire

#Wildflowerhour Fabulous quaking grass from #BrockholesNatureReserve for this week's #GrassChallenge. Question, is the challenge knowing the grass or trying to get a photo when they wibble? 🤭 @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social #Preston @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social #Lancashire

Sand Sedge, Carex arenaria #wildflowerhour #grasschallenge

Pretty sure this one's Marsh Ragwort but as it's a new species for me I need to check the rest of my photos when I've got them off my camera. #WildflowerHour

A new one for me - Brookweed. I didn't have a clue what it was when I found it at Strumpshaw Fen so I took some photos and some helpful people resolved my confusion. #WildflowerHour

The second of my two contributions to the #GrassChallenge is Hard Rush. Or at least that's what I think it is. Dominating the big wet meadow at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen yesterday when I went to spend some time at the famous dragonfly site. #WildflowerHour

From RSPB Strumpshaw Fen yesterday - a white form of Marsh Thistle. #WildflowerHour

It's #GrassChallenge day on #WildflowerHour so here's Purple Moor Grass from Whixall Moss on the England Wales border on Friday.

this feels like people are erroneously assuming that things that are broadly true of US politics must also apply to Britain - the same heuristic that sometimes misleads politicians into assuming there must be votes in sucking up to Trump

RSPB Strumpshaw Fen yesterday. I asked the volunteer at the entrance if there were #dragonflies about and he said they had good numbers of Scarce Chaser and Norfolk Hawker. He wasn't joking. #invertebrates #UKWildlife #odonata @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

Paging #WildflowerID. Two plants I'm unsure of, from Strumpshaw Fen in Norfolk yesterday. The yellow one I think is Marsh Ragwort, which is new for me if correct. The white one, erm, confused. Doesn't look like anything I can think of so I don't even know where to look in the book. #WildflowerHour

The White-faced Darter #dragonfly is retreating northwards in the UK, the only remaining site outside Scotland and northern England being Whixall Moss on the Wales/England border. Which is where I went on my day off on Friday. #invertebrates #UKWildlife

Here’s a little secret - the journalists who write articles about how London has fallen all live in London and love it. They go to the theatre, exhibitions, gigs, pubs, restaurants, parks and know their kids’s schools are the best in the country. They slag London off in print for money. That’s it.

The dangers of making a joke on social media: a case-study.

Was with 100k+ people in Hyde Park last night having a lovely evening as the sun set. Walked to Green Park to get home and passed dozens of great bars + restaurants. These tedious misanthropes need to go outside.

I see the Telegraph has softened its opposition to drug use, at least in the case of its own columnists.

The "trad Cath" movement isn't the tradition of Catholicism. It's the Catholicism of people who identify as traditionalists. Should you be scared of it? I don't know. But personally, as a lifelong Catholic, I'm ****ing terrified.

So glad Uncle Joe took Mel Brooks to see Ethel Merman in ‘Anything Goes’ 90 years ago. From his delicious ‘All About Me!’

New material for public law exam questions

Fair play to the schedulers here.

Recently had a softball rules query from someone who'd asked ChatGPT to explain a rule rather than looking it up in the actual rulebook. Which is available online for free. She was confused as to why the rule as stated by ChatGPT didn't match what all the actual umpires did during games...

With hindsight, a country whose path to independence began with throwing tea in the harbour instead of drinking it was never likely to end well.

Came home today to a present from my wife...I feel this may get a LOT of use in the office at work

Opinion | America is a nation of stupid assholes and our laws and institutions should reflect that.

The warm weather has finally brought these things out of hibernation.

Asterisks are ****ing great. I swear by them.

“If you don’t approve, you can ignore”. Words to live on social media by.

One of the reasons it's interesting to watch non-prestigious, ITV quiz shows is a reminder of how little "common knowledge" lots of people have - and this is already a sub-group that put themselves forward to go on TV to answer questions.

If I was a Tory MP, I wouldn't be waiting for someone else to challenge Kemi Badenoch, I think I'd look at this and say 'well if you are going to say something this stupid then clearly anyone can be leader, so I may as well have a go'.
