Now is your last chance to find a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker nest. For the next week LSW young will be calling from the nest hole and you may hear them. So have a good search in your local woods. LesserSpotNet volunteers are already watching/monitoring twelve nests in the Midlands & South England.

Only two more days left to apply…

Some pied flycatchers seem already paired up with some nest building already started @piedflynet.bsky.social At least 6 males and 4 females seen today

Lots of new females have shown up and spring is going bonkers in the woods. Lots of singing, males defending territories and showing females some holes. Lots of fun. @piedflynet.bsky.social

At least half the male pied flycatchers back at East Dartmoor now, with some pairs starting nest building.

First Blue tit egg at East Dartmoor was April 4 2025. There are 3 earlier lay dates since mid-1950s, all in 2019. Probably about 1 in 8 pairs have started laying - much the same pattern as in 2019. Suggests we can expect first Pied Flycatcher eggs 2 weeks from now. #phenology

Registration is now open for the Hole-nesting Birds Conference 2025! Researchers of all career stages are warmly invited to join us in the historic city of Olomouc, Czechia. #ornithology [Link to register: registrace.rapl.upol.cz/Form/HoleNes...

First male Pied Flycatcher singing this morning at East Dartmoor. Second earliest arrival recorded on the reserve. #phenology

PhD opportunity with me (RSPB) at Sheffield Hallam combining ecology (building-nesting birds esp. Swift) + building design & planning (Net Zero goals & retrofit). We need a strong student interested in both! Is that you? url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/cNyjCR636C... Please repost.

We’re now entering the peak period for finding Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. Here’s a couple of clips of Ken Smith from @lesserspotnet.bsky.social with some top tips youtu.be/YcKQWWezFos?...

We're hiring a fieldworker to help with some of our projects in Wytham Woods this spring. Wonderful place to work (and live), especially in the spring. Get in touch if you'd like to know more.

📣 New PhD position on flycatchers with @qvarnstromlab.bsky.social — spread the word! Combine bioinformatics, long-term datasets and field work to explore climate adaptation and speciation in the lovely flycatchers. Join us in Uppsala, Sweden! Apply by Mar 18: www.uu.se/en/about-uu/... #ecoevojob

New paper from @joewoodman.bsky.social DPhil thesis now published. Here, Joe (& 30 friends) use @spibirds.bsky.social to collate data on age structure for 32 Great Tit populations spanning 67 years & involving 130 000 individual birds. Why did we do this? 1/n onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

New paper out! Read Ben’s great post on how/why we used a combined 702 yrs of data from >130k great tits spanning 3200km to assess spatial synchrony in age structure⬇️ Thanks to all the amazing co-authors and @spibirds.bsky.social for promoting broad-scale analyses like this! doi.org/10.1111/ele....

Fieldwork opportunity: We're looking to hire a field assistant for the www.phenoweb.org project starting 1 April. Please repost. #phenology #fieldwork #birdringing

New paper! @jappliedecology.bsky.social https://bit.ly/3C5gYJp We mapped out the migrations of over 10K ind ⚫-tailed godwits (!) to characterize connectivity between sites in Europe and Africa. We compiled tracking data, ring recoveries and resightings: >400K records in total! (1/5)

Worrying news from the heartland of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers in Britain. Meanwhile, in #Wales the number of sites at which LSW is recorded has more than halved in the last 15 years (chart from forthcoming @birdsinwales.bsky.social 2023 Bird Report). Sad times. #BirdingWales (1/2)

Do you want to carry out fieldwork in Togo, West Africa? Are you a bird ringer who is available from Feb-May 2025? Then check out the (paid) field worker positions available here: cutt.ly/yeM807A9. The deadline for applications is January 13 2025. #ornithology
