The trees all around the farm are covered in delightful lemon yellow orbs; we rehabilitate & release a large number of goldfinches each year, and though they disperse we've definitely got a lot more around. Many of these are likely kids we've sent back to the wild years past, it makes me so happy!

In case ye missed it earlier

There’s almost nothing cooler than seeing a massive strangler fig in a primary rainforest. Strangler figs can be a number of species of Ficus; they germinate on other trees up in the canopy, then grow downward and eventually root. If the host tree dies, it leaves a hollow scaffolding like this. 🌿

Deep in the Pyrenees and barely into France, we saw a handful of Fire Salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) in the forest today. I saw this species in Belgium three weeks ago, so today’s observations help serve to bookend my trip. #herps #salamanders 🌿

The aptly named farewell-to-spring, a Clarkia species, looking as lovely as ever.😍 They are nice to look at, but each year, when I first see them, I think, "Uh, oh ... here comes summer!" 😅

One of the most unsettling conversations I ever had was with a guy from NASA about 8 years ago. I expressed my skepticism that space colonisation was worthwhile. He expressed that it was an amazing way of selling billionaires on the idea of funding tech we’d need here on earth in a few decades.

This Week in Kevin Got the Heck Outside: an oriole, deer, kingbird, and waxwing! 🪶

It’s good to see me, isn’t it? 💜✨ Yes, yes, the rumors are true — we are OFFICIALLY launching here on Bluesky! In case you forgot, we’re a place to buy books online where every purchase supports local bookstores, not billionaires. Thanks for being here 🙌🏽

Happy #BlueSkyMonday and #MacroMonday! This weird Love-in-a-Mist flower seems fit for #AlphabetChallenge #WeekWForWacky. #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited #PhotographersOfBluesky #photography #MobilePhotography #ArtYear

"Enfloofenation". Noun. The act or process of flexing all your feathers at once 🪶 (It's Mary the blue jay!)

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius. This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

Please enjoy this ridiculously cute butterfly, which was about the size of my pinkie fingernail. It's in the butterfly family called metalmarks (Riodinidae). Males, like these, have reduced front legs and perch using only the rear 4 (females can use all 6). Sarota acantus; Costa Rica 🐙🌿 #insects

My Work From Home office mate is kinda lazy

Make sure that you regularly read to your birds, and teach them all about their heritage and history. It's a very important part of them growing up well rounded and worldly.

A shot of the entrance to the container garden. It’s taken me three years to get this moss coverage. #garden #gardening #moss

Finally read Cheddar Luck Next Time (as an ebook from my library) by @bethcato.bsky.social and definitely liked it.

Now she's really flowering. 🌱 #gardening #bloomscrolling

We got some new blooms in the side garden up front! 🌱

Thank you, science for validating my life-long stationary and notebook fetish.

When you buy Rowling's books, watch her shows, buy her merchandise, play her games, you're supporting her funding anti-trans actions that are ruining people's lives. Please stop.

Last spring we planted a few different native plants in our garden and even last summer, we noticed an increase in bees! One of the plants was Prairie Smoke, and the overcast light showed off how beautiful and delicate they are!

My doctor changed my diagnosis to "Endocrine Disorder" in November without me asking--because he saw the writing on the wall. Ask your doctors to do the same--Just to protect your access to life-saving medication.

Someone put a mirror out with the trash near Grange Park, and this one Canada goose is VERY MAD at this FUCKING GUY who will not STEP OFF

Uhhhh so the experimental water jug technique to grow anise hyssop turned out okay. 😳 (Water jugs act like mini greenhouses to get seeds started in northern planting zones. This jug went through subzero weather and snow! I also started spinach this way. This was my 1st winter trying this out.)

There is a particular section of floor that is always warm and Shaw is wallowing on it.

New blog post: Garden Challenges and Tiny Harvests #gardening

Today my Buy Nothing group held a free “yardsale”. Over 50 houses signed up to put things out free for the taking and a member made a Google treasure map and I spent the morning walking around with friends. We all got some amazing stuff and met neighbours and the world can be a good place sometimes!

A lovely gift arrived yesterday from one of the sweetest corners on the internet. @roxaminis sent me this gorgeous quilt that she made. Thank you, Roxanne!

I haven't decided exactly where I will display the quilt sent by @roxaminis on IG, but I couldn't wait to take some glamor shots of it. This is just a temporary display set up with the bed and some furniture from my cardboard dollhouse. Thank you for the beautiful gift, Roxanne!❤️

“I’m feeding the birds” is boring. “I have to put out an offering for my tiny winged overlords” is both more fun and accurate.

"I heard today," the cat I share a house with said, "that you humans only have one life." "Most of us have only one, yes," I said. "And you chose to spend it with me." "Well, you moved in." "You chose to spend it with me." "When you put it like that, yes." "You are wiser than you look."

Got photo evidence finally (they're all shy and I'm too focused on feathered wildlife typically)

A little more Spangle-cheeked Tanager for your enjoyment. At Paraiso Quetzal Lodge #CostaRica #birds #nature

Strawberry flower. Has the traditional appearance of many agricultural fruit flowers—white petals encircling a bright yellow center, with no barriers to entry. Basically the botanical version of arms wide open wearing a POLLINATORS WELCOME tshirt. #flower #garden #gardening #BloomSky

Wow, I found a Scarlet Tanager this evening! This is maybe a once a year bird for me. So exciting. 🪶

Sweet girl, could the rest of us have some AC too? No? Okay. #dogs
