Had the opportunity to chat about @poojaswali.bsky.social's study on louse-borne relapsing fever on the French radio today 🧬🦠 www.radiofrance.fr/francecultur... @franceculture.fr @radiofrance.fr @crick.ac.uk @ucl.ac.uk

Our @ucl.ac.uk @crick.ac.uk work, out this week in @science.org, traces a genetic time series of bacterial infections to reveal when and how Borrelia recurrentis jumped from ticks to humans—via our body lice. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

New UCL-Crick led paper out this week in @science.org on the evolution of louse-borne relapsing fever led by @poojaswali.bsky.social. See below for her thread explaining the work and it's relevance to when and how this bacteria has adapted to louse-borne human infection. tinyurl.com/76vzy4tn

Scientists used to think diseases that jump from animals to people really took off when people started domesticating cattle, sheep and goats 11,000 years ago. A new look at ancient bacterial DNA in @science.org by @poojaswali.bsky.social and colleagues suggests the pivotal moment came much later.

And sharing this BBC Science in Action podcast featuring my amazing supervisor @lucyvandorp.bsky.social (from 24:00) discussing the paper www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

I love this site so much, and our understanding of it has been enhanced in ways we couldn’t have imagined thanks to the hard work of @poojaswali.bsky.social and colleagues! Thanks for letting us be a part of this incredible research! 🥰

Congratulations @poojaswali.bsky.social (and everyone else involved) for this amazing achievement! Very excited to have been a part of this ancient pathogen research🦠🧬

And a wonderful article covering our new paper written by @spoke32.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...

Excited to announce our paper on ancient Borrelia genomes is finally out! 🦠💀We document the evolutionary history of louse-borne relapsing fever, published today in @science.org‬ with @lucyvandorp.bsky.social and @pontus-skoglund.bsky.social #aDNA 🏺🧪🧬 Main findings and paper below: 🧵⬇️

Today @ugiatucl.bsky.social explored the use of #AI in biology through a special seminar event. Great talks from @mariasecrier.bsky.social, Chris Barnes, Cedric Tan and Alexei Yavlinsky spanning bacterial pangenomes, cancer biology and viral evolution. Thanks to Marina Escalera and UGI seminar team.

Come join us at the Bioinformatics Research Centre at Aarhus University. Tenure track/associate professor position available. The application deadline is approaching, June 1, 2025. Application details here: international.au.dk/about/profil...

🚨 Excited to share our new paper! 🧬 #aDNA from Sint-Truiden (BE) reveals 1,000 years of change from diverse medieval roots including Scottish and Irish ancestry to modern Limburg-like genetics. 🧫 Yersinia pestis found in 5 of 58 XIV-century burials. #AcademicSky link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Solidarity with trans women after today’s Supreme Court ruling. The rollback of LGBT rights — especially trans rights — is global, bankrolled by billionaires and the far-right. Trans rights are human rights. We must defend the Equality Act and its protections for trans people.

For my first-ever bsky post, I’m thrilled to share our latest #ancientDNA research, which I co-led with @jessthorpemas.bsky.social OA: doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msaf065 We recovered and analysed mitochondrial genomes from many #mammoths spanning the last million years 🦣🧬⌛ Check this 🧵 we wrote ⬇️

🚨 New release of #AncientMetagenomeDir! (v25.03.0, Historic Centre of Cordoba) github.com/SPAAM-commun... It is a community resource of #metadata of >2K shotgun-sequenced #AncientMetagenome or ancient microbial genome enriched samples & >5K libraries. Stats below (🧵 1/5)

🦠 1/6 Big new study alert on old animal diseases! Team analyzed 346 ancient animal bones & teeth spanning 6,000 years across Eurasia, hunting for traces of ancient pathogens. Found 68 signatures, including some nasty zoonotic diseases we still deal with today! 🤢

I’ll be talking about ancient DNA at the wonderful @ri-science.bsky.social on the 1st of March 🧬 🦴Interactive afternoon show for young explorers 💀Evening talk for any adults fascinated by the secrets hidden in ancient genomes! 👇 #Scicomm

New paper out! 📄 My first adventures in (ancient) metagenomics. 🦠 “Exploring DNA degradation in situ and in museum storage through genomics and metagenomics” www.nature.com/articles/s42... Curious about the water color painting (see ALT text)? 🦌 Thread (Bluetorial?) with findings! 🧶👇 (1/n)
