"only in the past 50 yrs did the German language stop being a requirement for chemistry degrees in the US. 20 yrs from now, what is going to be the language of science? Is it going to be English? I don’t know that for certain.” Sudip Parikh www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The good thing about science is that it’s true no matter what you believe. The bad thing about deadly diseases is they will affect you and your loved ones no matter your level of trust in science. Restoring public trust does not mean killing medicines even for those who still believe in science.

Important moments to acknowledge and celebrate at AAAS with @sbilbo.bsky.social @marinap63.bsky.social NOTE: President of PNI, President of @ibroorg.bsky.social and President of @aaas.org 🎉🧠🤜🤛

In Los Altos, CA💡Geneticist Sannidhi Menon got her start in a NSF-funded startup. Federally funded research makes these businesses possible. “Since most companies don’t invest in ideas this early in development, federal funds are crucial for discovery.”🧪🏠 www.losaltosonline.com/opinion/rece...

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Imagine if every scientist published an op-ed in their hometown paper showing how their community sparked their curiosity & shaped the research that's now changing the country? That's what @sciencehomecoming.bsky.social is promoting—collective action, one story at a time. doi.org/10.1038/d415...

"Imagine the auto industry without 3D printing. NSF funded that. Artificial intelligence? NSF. MRI machines that help doctors diagnose you? NSF. Doppler radar technology that makes aviation safer by conquering wind shear? NSF. Duolingo‘s underlying programming? NSF. The internet itself? NSF."

Out now in @nathumbehav.nature.com: Cuts to NIH funding will impact the economy and employment nationwide. We visualize these losses and advocate for a theory-driven approach to communicating local, self-relevant impact. w/ @joshuasweitz.bsky.social + SCIMaP team: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

"One great thing about communicating to people about science is that people already love science. It’s really a matter of refreshing their memory.” - @cantlonlab.bsky.social www.cmu.edu/dietrich/new...

WHOA. That's a lot. Scientists, let's get out there and tell the public about this, and also share all the science we are doing! Write an op-ed for your hometown paper June 16 to speak to your hometown community. More info and sign up now: tinyurl.com/McClintockLetters #SciComm #McClintockLetters

Neuroscientist Sarah Heilbronner is a proud product of Martin County schools in Florida 🌴. However, federal budget cuts threaten important work she's doing in brain research. 🧪🏠 @srheilbronner.bsky.social www.tcpalm.com/story/opinio...

Federal funding for research is under unprecedented threat. How the public responds to this threat depends on whose stories they hear. To increase public awareness of the value of federally-funded research, join the McClintock Letters Initiative.  buff.ly/P85PopY

My #scicom show "The Perils of Being Born in the Fall" @toronto-fringe.bsky.social‬ is an hour of edu-tainment touring through the wackiness of early 19th century psychiatry, stealthy mid-century reproductive rights activism, and learning why cold & flu season has impacts on mental health. I closed the skepticism quiz. If you want to learn more about the questions and answers, I posted a summary of the results.

>90% of us use data produced by federally-supported science, such as weather forecasts, job market reports, food safety warnings, etc. But only 10% are concerned that cuts to federal support for science might impact their access to this data. 🤔🫤🧩 www.npr.org/2025/05/06/n...

Harvard will no longer receive ANY federal research money, per letter to the school: "Harvard should no longer seek GRANTS from the federal government, since none will be provided. Harvard will cease to be a publicly funded institution, and can instead operate as a privately-funded institution."

IMHO, envy is a useful personal tool that points me to subconscious desires, which may or may not be aligned with conscious values and aspirations. Good to know!
