The black bear phone calls started today…

The President’s FY 2026 “Skinny Budget” proposes the elimination of the U.S. Forest Service’s State, Private, and Tribal Forestry (SPTF) programs—this would absolutely devastate the KS Forest Service. Call your reps.

There’s not going to be a happy ending for the first Kansas City black bear…

Purple Milkweed hasn’t bloomed yet but it’s one of my favorite early summer woodland blooms.

This might become a milkweed account for the month of May.

Asclepias amplexicaulis is a rare find. Rarely pollinated. I know of three individuals in this 1700 acre park.

We split up and did different mountain bike trails but just sent each other photos of plants and animals the whole time lol

Saint Cloud is so damn good. Wish Waxahatchee and Wilco were playing a show in KC.

Sunday morning music with Daptone Records.

The second season of Andor is heavy….

The National Science Foundation, a major government funder of basic science research, is being shaken up with over 1,000 grants already terminated and the White House looking to halve its budget.

The joy of my first scissortail of the year is tempered with expanding suburban development laying waste to their habitat.

Stunning 5 year old prairie I planted right before Covid hit. Balanced and on track towards stability.

Had gravy based dishes at Ragazza and Lady Bird Diner this weekend. My poor arteries….

Diamond Jubilee by Cindy Lee is so fucking good. 10/10

I’ve spent more of my life trying to define park classification types and allowable uses than any other professional conversation.

A garage sale this morning had sooooo many good alternative CDs in Lenexa.

Beautiful swallowtail surprise in the backyard!

5 years from seed to bloom for Baptisia australis. I’ve been restoring this unit for 11 years. It’s a slow grind.

Tennessee Warbler this morning! Migration is ramping up.

I’ve watched natural systems collapse for the last 20 years. The loss of birds and invertebrates is noticeable. It hurts. We push forward and do the work regardless. Happy Earth Day!

An old growth prairie out my office window is 10/10
