Finished Judgement at Tokyo this am on the train in - generally a very good book if somewhat prone to Generic American Liberal rhetorical flourishes at times - but I hadn’t realised how Chinese nationalism about Japan was clamped down on in the Mao years and it was only later it became official.

The emblematic bit of the callous futility of the whole thing was someone having to design a form and exemption for situations where the additional child wasn’t conceived consensually It is interesting that neither it nor pro-natal tax breaks have any noticeable effects on birth rates though.

It shouldn’t escape wider attention, I think, that this attack probably cost in the region of a few million quid and achieved the feat of deep strikes on enemy airfields that have been historically “top ten global economy devotes a material part of its GDP to” btw
